The first Kindle upgrade is The Kindle DX. Released in 2009, it was the second generation Kindle. The DX was made significantly larger than the original Kindle and had the ability to support PDF files. Though it was larger in size, it was thinner than the original Amazon Kindle and better for reading textbooks and newspapers.
As mentioned above, the Kindle DX is larger than the original Kindle. Its screen is a whopping 9.7 inches versus the 6-inch Kindle Screen. The DX has an E Ink screen, like many of the other devices in the popular e-book series and is apart of the 3G network.
The Kindle DX is sold internationally. It ships to scores of countries, nearly 100 in all. There are some restrictions based on the country in which the Kindle is being used. For instance, Whispernet, Amazon’s 3G Network, is only available to U.S. users.
Following the initial DX release the DX graphite was made available. This was to be the updated version of the device. Though it was the next generation DX, it was cheaper then the original, by more than $100. The Graphite also had an E Ink screen. However, the contrast ratio was improved by 50%. The case color was graphite. There was some speculation that this change wasn’t only made for aesthetic value, but to improve functionality, particularly to make the contrast ration perception better.
The Kindle DX Graphite, also referred to as the DXG, has 128 MB of system memory and uses 2.5.8 firmware, which is what the Kindle 2 runs. The DXG has been classified as a 3rd generation Kindle but some of its software is identical to what’s used in the Kindle 2. The hardware, however, is similar to that of the Kindle 3.
The Kindle DX and the Kindle DX Graphite are currently the most expensive Amazon Kindle devices on the market, thus they won’t be the best option for people on a budget. The DX or DXG might, however, be a good choice for those with a little more room in their budget.
The large screen is one of the Kindle DX’s best features because it allows for easy reading and viewing. The ability to switch from portrait to landscape quickly and easily is nice as well. The free wireless (Whispernet) and swift processing speed are other great features that buyers are likely to enjoy and appreciate. I recommend this to annyone looking for the best e-reader, as I myself own 4 different types of e-readers I enjoy this the most.
