The question of “what is the best e-book reader” is a difficult one to answer. I will be able to help you answer this question in a way that might help you to come to a good conclusion. There are several e-book reading formats available now and the market is growing all the time. In the comparison below I will show you e-readers from both ends of the scale.

Both have widely differing features. Because one does a lot more than the other, this does not mean that one is better than the other.

Apple I-Pad

  • This is a top of the range quality piece of hardware
  • It looks good
  • The screen is quite large as e-readers go
  • The screen is a full colour backlit LED touch-screen, a delight to use
  • 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage is available
  • A very respectable 10hr battery life
  • Play games using tilt and touch-screen technology
  • Watch movies and videos
  • Surf the net
  • Read books magazines and newspapers
  • Access to literally thousands of book at lower prices than hard copy
  • Built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Thousands of Apps available for this device
  • Will play music
  • All in all a very attractive package

Apples device is more than just an e-reader and this is reflected in the price, so if you really feel that all the extra applications are worth it and appeal to your lifestyle then it doesn’t come much better than this.

Having said all this, wasn’t the original question; “What is the best e-book reader?” It is the essence of this review. This is one decision you can make confidently right now. Do I want a dedicated e-reader or something that has a lot of features with an e-book reader attached? Let’s look at our next contender, specifically designed to be focused on electronic book reading.

Kindle 3: What is the best e-book reader?

  • Mainly a reading device
  • Incorporates the latest e-ink technology for crisp fonts and easy reading
  • Screen looks very much like real paper
  • Screen is anti-glare even in the brightest sunlight
  • Extremely light and portable
  • Very compact unit and as thin as a pencil
  • Very pocket-able
  • Battery life extends up to one month
  • Will store an amazing 3500 books or equivalent reading material
  • Built in Wi-Fi which allows for book downloads of just 60secs
  • Can browse web
  • New “lend a book” facility introduced so you can swap books
  • Has a keyboard to annotate documents and books
  • All you accumulated books can be backed up to the Kindle store
  • It is PDF compatible
  • If you get tired the Kindle will read your book to you
  • Will play some music in MP3

As you can see, the Kindle has a lot going for it and it is obvious that the emphasis in the design is toward reading whereas the Apple is leaning toward doing everything and since you already own gadgets that will do many of these things already, is it for you?

Let’s have a look at some pros and cons:

Apple I-Pad: What is the best e-book reader?

  • Screen will reflect sunlight outdoors
  • Heavier and may give some fatigue when held for long periods
  • Larger than some readers so less portable and pocket-able
  • If you are thinking that this is the ideal thing to consolidate several gadgets then the downside is that you cannot multitask on the I-Pad like on your computer
  • Lack of flash player gives a peculiar experience, big blank gaps where the adverts should be. Will appeal to some
  • Battery life though very respectable could be an inconvenience with so many features to run
  • Can store a mega 50,000 books/articles

What is the best e-book reader? In conclusion, if you are after a straight forward e-reader, then the Kindle will take a lot of beating especially at the price. If you feel that you need all the applications and the superb colour touch-screen of the Apple then this could be the best e-book reader for you, but be prepared to pay more.
