Talking! It’s old fashioned. How to connect by email is about old-fashioned talking.
What is high touch?
Talking is a high touch way to connect. Partly that’s because you get a lot more cues when you’re really using your own voice to connect with someone in person.
When you get more cues, you have a better chance to connect. That’s why handshakes and bows work.
How do signals matter?
You get signals from people based on how you each bow. You guess less about someone’s intentions when you share a handshake.
How do you cross cultures?
You get to demonstrate an understanding of culture, even across cultures, when you gather in person. For example, I once held tight to an elderly woman’s feet, knowing that if I did so long enough, she would bless me.
It was an unusual situation! It was a form of respect. Someday I’ll write a story about it.
You’ll laugh because it was a form of serving. Finding delight in differences tends to be a good form of laughter, too.
My serving in that situation saved her life and that of her extended family. Life is stranger than fiction;)
Timing vs. perfect time
When you take a bit of a leap of faith, you can pour your feelings into whatever you share in any kind of talking. If you do that with email your messages will always be delivered at the perfect time because your recipient gets to choose that time.
That’s why social media are so popular. You can talk in your own way, share feelings and launch new relationships.
Social media can act to connect you with people across time and distance. Each person gets to choose the perfect time to connect.
Feelings require a leap of faith
Connecting is about feelings in some ways. When we connect on social media, we’re making a leap of faith that crosses the boundaries of time, space and the coldness and reduced cues of high-tech communication.
That means the human spirit is finding new ways to reach out.
You can connect with people by talking. You can make a leap of faith and learn how to connect by email.
Notice powerful connections!
Talking in large groups differs from talking in small groups. That’s true offline and online.
There’s power in talking in small groups. There’s even more power in one-on-one conversation.
One-on-one conversation draws people closer. Email from your heart matters because you can enter one-on-one conversations.
Dare to be high touch in emails! That’s how to connect by email.
Nice article Cynthia, email seem to be the main avenue for communication by many people from afar.
Thank you, Alfred. It does doesn't it? Social media's great, but email gives you the ability to hone in on helping one another from afar. That's a good reason for it to be, like you phrase it so well, the main avenue for communication by many people from afar. Thanks for being here and thank you for your compliment and insight.
I must admit my emails are often on the cryptic side. I'll try to do a little of the high touch in the future
Bravo! Recognizing a problem is a critical step toward a solution. Committing to giving a try at something different is a leap at tackling and claiming a solution for yourself. Thanks for your compliments.
