1-Brainwaves Change Over Time

As we change our activity, the brainwaves change as well. You are in Beta when you drive your car, and you begin to enter Alpha state when you park your car, and enter the house feeling more relaxed. When you continue in a relaxed state and begin to fall asleep, this means you are beginning to enter Theta state. Theta develops to Delta if you fall deep asleep. This shows that the brain is able to shift from one state to another without difficulty. However, research makes it clear that some persons can not shift freely from different brainwave states, and this is because of factors that stop the brain from changing its speed.

2- Why the Brain is Stuck?

These are the obstacles that make the brain stuck:

A-Fatigue & Lifestyle: When you drain yourself and engage in many tasks and activities, and then feel exhausted and tired, this may create slower brainwaves.

B- Drugs, Alcohol & Medications: These may cause brain damage. Drugs like cocaine have harmful effects on the brain. Brain damage causes the brain to be slower with weaker memory.

C-Negative Emotions: Stress and negative emotions also cause the brain to be slower and they induce it to be mainly left brained, which is not to the advantage of the person for many reasons, as explained in my previous articles about right/left brain.

D-Sleep Disorder: Sleeping less hours will make the brain tired.

We must know the difference between natural slowing down of the brain and its slowing down as a result these obstacles. The obstacles drain the mental energy of the brain while during sleep it can maintain its energy at a high level.

3- How to Influence the Brain for a Specific Brainwave State?

We have to change our brain frequency so as to achieve a desired state. If the desired state is sleeping, we have to be in Theta. When we intend to be alert, we have to speed up the brain to Beta. Fortunately, we have techniques that we can use to change the peed of the brain. These tools are visualization, hypnosis, relaxation breathing patterns, and meditation. These tools will slow down the brainwaves and induce a different state. We can also speed up the brain speed if we want to, but only under expert-level hypnosis. These tools can program the brain to be in slower brainwaves. Akira Kasamatsu and Tomio Hirai had one interesting study about Zen monks who used to meditate deeply. It was clear from EEG readings that all monks while meditating reached the slowest speed of Delta but only in order and sequence, meaning that they reached first Beta and they slowed down to Alpha and then Theta. Another interesting phenomena observed in the study, is that the level of brainwaves of each monk reflects his experience in meditation, meaning that older monks who had 20 years experience in meditation, produced the highest level of Theta among other monks, and even with high Theta level, the monks did not sleep but rather were mentally alert.
