Stuck In the Mud When I Was Fired at 50+

4 weeks ago I was let go from my job that I had held for 5.5 years. I was a studio manager in a small advertising company. Their reason: downsizing. My position as a studio manager had become redundant. It was nothing personal they said. This is not about you but about our business, or lack of it, and can we please have your key. This lovely episode occurred at 5 pm on a Monday. I swallowed hard. In my heart I knew it was coming. Clients were dropping off, many of them not wanting to pay the overhead that comes with having an advertising firm handle your marketing campaigns. It seemed clients preferred to opt for freelancers whose sole overhead was paying themselves. Basically they were cutting out the middle man. This was happening time and time again. For most of the year I found myself filing and refiling images, archiving jobs, surfing the net and basically doing anything to pass the time. This was not normal for an extended period of time. I told myself it was only a matter of time before I received that call "can you meet us in the boardroom for a minute?"

No matter how much I expected that call, when I got it, my stomach rose to my throat and my limbs became rubbery. My heart sped up and I found it hard to breathe. I tried to be noble but in my head I wanted to scream. I hardly heard what they had to say. Something about a ten week severance package and please don't hesitate to ask us for a reference. By the time I headed back to my office my mind was spinning and all I wanted to do was get out of there and never look back. I cleaned out my office in the five minutes they gave me, deleted what I could of my personal files and hightailed it out of there. The drive home that I had taken for the last 5+ years was a blur.

What I didn't tell them was how scared I was. I am over 50 and know that I am getting too old to be "hireable." Companies are hiring younger for the simple reason that younger people are more connected with social media and are much cheaper to employ. I knew this because I had been looking for a job for the past six months. Out of all the places I applied, I only received one call back. She seemed excited to meet me. When she interviewed me, I knew she wasn't going to hire me. I wanted too much money and was too old for their young company. I was terrified I wouldn't find a decent job again.

Being an optimist I decided this was a great time to consider a career change. There are many things I want to do but unfortunately because all of my working life has been devoted to the advertising industry I don't have the necessary skills.

This puts me in a precarious position. I need money to survive. To make money I need to work. To work I want to do something I would love to do. To do something I would love to do I need to get retrained in a new career. I need to go to school. To go to school costs money and doesn't pay. It is a sad cycle that somehow I am determined to beat. Some how, some way.

I have been telling myself over and over I am too old, no one will hire me. I have so many great skills but there is no where for me to work. I am done. I've wasted my life.

This changed today when I finally picked up of a book that points out that making judgemental affirmations like this to yourself is akin to getting your wheels stuck in mud. You spin and spin and spin, but you don't move an inch. Instead of the all encompassing doom of "I will never find a job, my life is over" try "I forgive myself for judging and believing for so long that it is impossible for me to find a job I like, that I cannot have the life I want." Once you release the judgement and forgive yourself for believing such statements change the way you address yourself.

My favourite passage that I've recited more than a few times today goes like this:

"My needs are valid... I love the process of finding and unfolding my own true being, I am finding a wealth within me that is deeply satisfying, I am excited about my life, I am opening to divine inspiration... I trust in the universe, my life is changing for the better... I am gaining clarity, my clarity and compassion are increasing day by day, I am achieving my dreams and goals, my health is improving as my love increases, I am feeling lighter, my happiness and my joy in life are increasing as I go along, I have the ability to find my own beliefs, judgements and imprints and guide my own development from here."

Already I feel like I am out of the mud and travelling on, feeling lighter, open to new opportunities, and what's more, I believe new opportunities are out there.

A far cry from where I was 4 weeks ago.

Turns out 10 months later this is true. Ah time. The great healer. Dr. Time.

Hang in there Yvonne. Kudos for the affirmations! I still think dog care is a possibility. You could start by taking care of a couple of dogs in your home. Put an ad on craigslist for dog daycare in your home. Research what dog daycares in your area are charging and just get started. There's no capital outlay and at first you won't need to apply for a business permit or worry about zoning. Most towns only get involved if you have 5 or more dogs you're charging for. Do keep in mind though, that the days when you have paying guests you can't leave the house under any circumstances, so you need to plan for that. Dogs in play groups need to be supervised constantly.

Divine inspiration found in trusting the universe is a wonderful thing. when you affirm that yes, you are incredible, the world opens like a beautiful flower before you reflecting back at you that wonderful image of yourself that you project. Doors will present themselves for you to open, hands will appear offering direction or assistance and you will find yourself busy with active accomplishment.

For now it takes constant practice to remember to utter those affirmations and believe them. I am opening to divine inspiration. I like the way my life is evolving... etc. It helps keep back that big scarey dollar sign with a big X through it looming it's ghostly face in the sky. Busy with active accomplishment? I like that!

Sounds like a raw deal. But you know what they say, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" - there's lots of freelancing sites on the internet, and you can freelance your skills out there. Freelancer and Odesk come to mind. You've written a good article - writing online is another big thing, and people pay good money for well researched and well written articles or ebooks.

Thanks Sunny. You are the first comment on my first article. Thanks for the tip on Odesk. I have looked into that, a very strange site with many employers seeming to pay very little. I figure this is a good start.... write some articles and see where it takes me.
