What Ever Happened To The Peoples Champion?
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

My good friend today asked me, "What ever happened to the people's champion?" He and I were having a debate about who to vote for in the next presidential election. I could tell the conversation was escalating and he really wanted to hear a specific answer that he wasn't going to get. In the end, the question of the people's champion came about but with a bit of sadness lingering. He said that no president had been everything to everyone. He spoke to heroes...he spoke of dreams...

I told him I truly believe many of us have been brainwashed by our history books...I know this is a pretty loaded statement but I believe it is true... Remember when you were in elementary school learning of our founding fathers, those who came before us, the presidents and the travelers from long ago who were heroes with no flaws. Our nation were ones with only good intent for everyone living in them. The truth is that no president ever was the embodiment of the people's champion for every single American, nor was any congress, house, or senate the perfect embodiment of what everyone wants. There is just the dream that they would be...We all are unique individuals, with our own beliefs-something that makes America great. But when thinking of the peoples' champion, it is a citizens like you and me in our walks of life, making a difference in the lives of others around us. There is a hero, but he/she isn't a man wearing a red, white, and blue cape, fighting for our rights...unless Captain America wants to jump out ofthe comic pages or off the big screen. It is each of us making our own plea for the rights of not just the few but for all people in this nation. Occupy Wallstreet has been making news lately and for good reason. Many are angry, worried, scared, tired, hurt, and frustrated. The start of this movement was way before the first banners of defiance against corporate greed. This was started way before politics, before Democrats, Republicans, Greeners, Socialists, Independents, Liberals, before congress, before a party, before mayors or governers were ever created. It was started with the idea that everyone deserves happiness.

The idea for movements such as these have morphed over time. People are sharing their anger, because they have been previously silenced. I've spokeof acknowledgement in previous entries and it is so true.Though my friend and I do not meeteye-to-eye, we look at each other's plight, acknowledge where we are at, and look at common ground.

This isn't a pagent speech of "World Peace" and I'm not Rodney Kingsaying, "Can't we all just get along." But I am saying to acknowledge others struggles. One could argue who's struggled more and many have, but by acknowledging that somehow everyone has experienced some adversity in life is a start. Be a people's champion in your everyday life...even if that isgivingacheck in to someone,"How is life?"

We have the ability todo so much for so many if we just take the time to hear another person's story and for them who knows, you may truly be their champion...believe inchange...
