Light Emitting Diodes, commonly called LED is widely used in modern electric devices, They tell you if switches of all kinds of appliances and electronics turn on. You can see displays in the dark thanks to back lights. Modern uses of LEDs is not limited by those. LED is also used for lighting in a house, outdoors, almost everywhere.
Miniature LED is small enough to fit into modern electric circuits or devices. It's been used for decades, such as an indicator lamp of on/off switch and back light of digital clock, cell phone, and portable game. But using LED for a general lighting purpose started quite recently after high brightness blue LED was invented in the 90'. Blue LED with red and green LED which had been already invented made it possible to create white LED. And today, you can see lots of modern uses of LEDs.
LED lamps or LED light bulbs are one of modern uses of LEDs. You can replace traditional incandescent light bulbs or compact fluorescent lamps with them. compact fluorescent lamp is relatively new innovations. it uses less energy than incandescent light bulbs and have longer lifespans. But it contains toxic mercury and a LED light bulb surpass the better characteristics of compact fluorescent lamps. The reason an incandescent light bulb and a compact fluorescent lamp are still around is that LED light bulb is more expensive than others. However, the price of LED light bulbs would be cheaper in a couple of years and considering their advantages, total cost including energy bills and replacement bulbs would soon become less.
Another notable and modern use of LEDs is found in LED TVs. To be exact, they're called LED back-lit LCD TVs. Because LED TVs still have LCD screen (not LED). It is just that the screen is illuminated by LEDs. Regular LCD TVs use compact fluorescent lamps as a back light. Since compact fluorescent lamp can't tun on and off faster than LED, some lights tend to stay even in the dark scene. But the main advantage of using LEDs is that manufacturers can make TVs extremely slim.
LED lighting technology is still in early stage. Yet, it have already made great advance in the last decade. In the future, more street lights will be replaced with LEDs. The light will have more colors and make displays more vivid. TVs will be getting thinner and thinner. They would be so thin that you would be able to roll up and carry around. Flashlights will be brighter but longer battery life. Or a completely brand new application of LED may be going to show up.
