The Cost Of Installing A Solar Water Heater

A solar water heater is a good way to get started on your path of energy independence (and the money saving that comes with it). Its one of the cheapest forms of alternative energy you can install in your home, and it will pay for itself a lot quicker than other forms (especially if you live in warmer climates). In this day in age, with fluctuating energy prices and environmental problems, it makes sense to try to stabilize and reduce your energy costs, while helping the environment out as well.

In the United States, a solar water heater will cost somewhere in the range of $2,000- $8,000. Installation will probably add another 10-20% on top of that. The cost will depend on the size and quality of the system, and will account for various factors: how much direct sunlight your region receives, the efficiency of your model, how much hot water you use every day, the angle of your roof as well as the direction it faces, etc.

These costs can be reduced further with a tax credit from the government, who will rebate 30% off the total cost, up to $2,000. The tax credit is valid until 2016. To be eligible your system must be certified by the Solar Rating Certification Corporation. Remember to keep all your receipts as they will be needed to verify your purchase.

The money you will save, and how long it takes to pay it off, depends how much hot water you use, the cost of the model, and the efficiency of the model. The average household in America puts about 25% of their energy consumption towards water heating. Solar water heaters can reduce a households overall water heating energy needs by 50 to 90%, depending on the models efficiency. So, based on these two figures, a solar water heater can reduce a households overall annual energy bills by 10-20%.

For a rough estimate on how long it would take for a solar water heater to pay for itself, figure out what your overall yearly energy costs are, and multiply by 0.15. The number you get is the money you'll save every year with a solar water heater. Divide the cost of the solar water heater you are looking at by this, and that will tell you how many years it will take for a solar water heater to pay for itself. Most people will get a number in the range of 5 to 10 years. Obviously this number will change depending on the efficiency of your solar water heater, but its a good ballpark estimate.

Good luck and stay prepared!
