Ladies, Thinking Of Proposing This Leap Year?

This year, 2012 is a Leap Year, and as is tradition, ladies are allowed to propose to men on the 29th February! Are you thinking of proposing to your significant other on this day? Or just thinking of being the one to pop the question? Then keep reading for some inspiration!

Leap years were brought in to keep our calender in check with the Earth's orbit around the Sun. If we didn't have an extra day every 4 years, in 100 years our calender would end up being wrong by 24 days! The tradition of a woman being allowed to propose on a Leap Day is said to date back to the 5th Century when St. Bridget complained to St Patrick about the plight of women having to wait so long for the man to propose. St Patrick saw this and said that women would now be allowed to propose to a man once every 4 years on Leap Day-Look, you've gotta know your stuff! Onto the bit you're probably looking for-

Alot of women and men feel that proposing should be left up to the man as it's tradition, but there are a growing number of women taking charge and making the first move.

My fiance and I made a deal, when I proposed to him, he would propose to me, a sort of joint venture. He argued that if I wanted equality within the relationship, I should show that I would take equal responsibility in decision making. He also liked the idea that I would be taking charge of something rather than waiting for him to be the boss. The proposal wasn't planned, but was romantic. Soon after moving into our first flat together (as opposed to a room in a shared house) in our living room, after a particularly good day, and a discussion about our future, I thought, what the heck, got down on one knee (I know) and made my promise to him, and in turn he did the same. (He did it again after we bought my engagement ring!) It was romantic, for us. And after some research I've found that many women have done it in a similar way.

My fiance didn't want his own mangagement ring, he's not into jewellery, but I possibly would have felt better holding a ring, and lots of men are rocking them right now. Personally, I wouldn't recommend the down on one knee thing in public, men pull that pose off much better. When I did it, it was a bit of a giggle in private, a personal joke, as I'm quite frequently making a fool of my self, and often referred to as a bit 'special'.

Take these statistics, 9% of proposals are from women, and 80% of men would accept a proposal from a woman. Good stats, right?

I think when considering proposing to your man, you should think of what would make him comfortable and would be appealing for him. Don't forget that women are the ones that usually watch the rom coms with the big romantic proposal and the end, and is what most of us seem to expect. Try them when they are most happy, like after their football team has won and they're still buzzing, celebrate with them and add in, 'why don't we get married?' Or after some good food, good conversation, and maybe a bit of action, afterwards drop in how you feel and ask him. Men tend to be creatures of comfort, and not into big scenes, especially if your taking on the traditionally male role!

Lots of people still view a woman making the first move and proposing to her boyfriend as a bit wrong, and against tradition, but we live in a changing society. Men stay at home and look after the kids, woman are the bread winners. Sure you can keep gazing and sighing at jewellery shops as you walk past them and hope your boyfriend notices, hell, why not knee cap him and force him onto one knee? Now surely that's not as strange as you making the first move and proposing! I think this would make a far better engagement story than, 'yeah he booked a private beach with a private orchestra, pulled out a £10000 ring, champagne, yadayadayada' Make this engagement event true to you and your relationship. Start as you mean to go on!
