Choosing The Right TV With Freeview Built In

Upgrading your old TV to a new Digital TV is something you should be doing now because the old Analogue TVs soon won't work.

All of theUK's TV transmitters are being switched over to Digital TV transmissions only and the old analogue system will soon be closed down!

With the completion of the Digital TV Switchover in the UK almost upon us (in fact it may have already happened by the time you read this), now is a good time to think about that old TV you have lying around the house with a TV with Freeview built in.

This isn't particularly difficult for most people, although the less able and elderly may find it a bit of a challenge. If you have someone like this as a neighbour it would be a good and neighbourly thing to do to check that they are aware of the fact that analogue is due to to switched off or may even have already happened and left with no TV to watch.

Freeview Digital TV will deliver many more channels than the old analogue, terrestrial TV ever did and at far better picture quality than before. The Digital TV Switchover can only be a vast improvement and will be welcome by all once they are set up to receive the far superior service.

How TV has changed over the years though! At the risk of 'aging myself' I remember the first TV I ever saw. It was 6inch model with a single channel (BBC TV) and was my Grandfather’s pride and joy. The whole family would gather around to watch it.

Some years later my father bought us our first TV. A vast improvement over Grandfather's TV in picture size, but it still had only the one channel. It was later upgraded, by means of a set-top box, which if switched to the second position gave us 'Commercial TV'! Amazing! Adverts on the television!

After that things improved steadily with the advent of colour TV and more channels. Still many repeats though, I seem to recall. Not a lot of programming choice in those days.

The TV sets of those days were big and heavy, although the screen sizes were very small by today's standards. I remember my father carrying the family TV Set up the stairs to the main bedroom where my mother was ill, bed-ridden and bored. A herculean effort! We all had to watch TV upstairs until mother recovered and the TV could be carried back to its usual place in the lounge again.

Colour TV, when it arrived, was a revelation. Football pitches and golf courses were actually Green!

People wore coloured clothes. Cars weren't all either black or grey! The sky looked Blue! Magic!

Fast forward to today with a TV in almost every room in the house in some cases and hundreds of channels to choose from on Digital TV. Colour, of course, but not many people would remember when it wasn't always so.

Getting a TV with Freeview built in is quite straightforward now with either a 'Freeview Ready' TV, a Freeview TV Box to connect to the existing analogue TV (brings back memories of the second channel set-top box of years ago!) or better still a FreeView TV Recorder. These units will record one channel (or more) while you watch another

Freeview TV Recorders also allow you to Pause, Rewind, and Record live TV and really do make TV viewing so much more convenient and enjoyable. No more missing a part of a programme because there was someone at the door. Just hit the Pause button or Rewind when you get back. Simple!

A TV with Freeview built in is relatively cheap today so it really is worth upgrading now. With Digital Flat Screen TV sizes starting from around 15 inches, through 19 inches and upwards you're sure to find the ideal one for you and your viewing room. Some TVs are monsters with screen sizes of 50 inches and more!

When you do upgrade your TV try to gauge just how big your set needs to be and what would look best in the home setting. Large displays in shops can be deceptive as even the biggest digital, flat screen TVs tend to look smaller than it would in your, smaller, lounge.

One way check what size you actually need is to cut a piece of cardboard (an old box will do) to the size and shape of the TV you are considering buying and place it in front of your existing TV screen (assuming that is where the new one will sit). Sit back in your favourite armchair and see if that size screen is ideal or if it should be bigger or smaller.

At least that way you won't be lumbered with a TV much too big for the room or too small to view comfortably without having to move your armchair closer.

A 19" TV such as the Toshiba 19DV501B is the ideal size for viewing distance of upto about 6 feet. Anymore than that and you may want to consider a larger screen model.

The larger sizes shown would most likely be screen sizes for TV Projectors, but that's another story!

A 19” TV with Freeview built in is an ideal size for a bedroom or even a kitchen while a screen size 40" and above is great in the lounge.

But whichever size of TV you choose, you will find your TV viewing will have moved firmly into the Digital Age, with more choice and a clearer, sharper image.
