Signs Of Old Age – Memories Of Yesteryear

The cringing advances of old age, signs of the progressing years, the memories of yesteryear, what will tomorrow bring? How age creeps up upon one unprepared to discover, the minds young age, is not reciprocated by the body. The early morning stiffness, no longer a pleasure, but a pain. The aches of muscles that never inconvenienced in the past, now a normality. How things have changed, the industrial revolution, the advances of technology, and the very enduring life style of today, something the older mind and body of a fifties child, struggles to keep up with and comprehend.

The fifties and sixties of the last century seem so long ago, the maturating then to now, almost incomprehensibly different. The Mothers of that era, smoked, drank, and partook in all the present day shunned and frowned upon foods, propounded to avoid today during pregnancy. They took self medication, and generally continued with their lives, unabated by today's magazine articles expounding the dangers to the foetus, evolving in their bodies. (Hmm, now I know why I smoke and drink, Mom!)

Children, apparently by present standards, raised to sleep and play in dangerous environments. Cots and houses covered in lead based paints, with no baby proofing, drawers filled with dangerous objects, tables with an array of items capable of causing grievous bodily harm, and many other similar frowned upon practices. How did my generation survive? Touch something you were not allowed to, and the hand received a smack, taught to leave alone that which was out-of-bounds. Put your finger in a plug point once too many and electricity taught you to listen to Mom.

Playing with toys in the dirt, small enough to swallow, bare foot and half clothed in the blazing sun, placing in our mouths living things considered extra protein by the parents. Drinking water from any source accessible, sometimes ingested with the alga floating on the surface of the pond, no bottled, boiled, or sterilised water only for us. Sweets and colas, supplied by Mothers to keep you still and happy, and out of their hair, whilst they prepared meals for the sole earner of the family, working mothers unheard of in those days.

Children leaving the house in the morning to play with friends, returning for lunch if uninvited at the place of frolicking, being home before the street lights lit by the lamplighter of old. Most of the time, building forts, swimming in streams and dams, and generally playing in places where your Mother could not find you. No cell phone communication then, TV was unheard of, Radio and radio broadcast stories the highlight of the evening. Cards and board games, family activities in the evenings. Trips to the airport on weekends to see the one and only air plane that would land that day.

Bicycling in the streets, without helmets, bare footed, and normally with brakes incapable of stopping the bicycle, requiring the bared feet. Riding in cars with no seat belts, jumping between the front and back seats, (only when Dad was not around. Never could understand his dislike of this activity, till I grew up!) accepting lifts home with strangers, unabated by the dangers of hitch hiking today.

Take away foods, limited to fish and chips or the ice cream parlours. Cooking oils, butter, white bread, sugar, sweets and colas consumed daily. Vegetables, always fresh, no frozen foods, freezer units of fridges were for making ice and ice lollies only. Left over foods, refrigerated and eaten within days, expiry periods for food, unheard of.

Teen years of the sixties and seventies, the era of free love, drugs and rock music. Hairstyles of ponderous proportions, Brylcream styled waves, beyond description. Duck tails and stove-pipes, gang fights using fists resulting in the medallions of black eyes and bruises. (No murder or drive by shootings.) Free love, seldom resulting in diseases or pregnancies, oh how good those days were. Drugs, experimented with, seldom resulting in serious addiction, only by those that could afford them. (Never tried it myself!) Dry oregano, smoked by many, believing it was dagga, experiencing “highs” they did not reach, yet would never admit to. Designer drugs, what was that?

Air guns and catapults, owned when young, used in games of “cops and robbers” and embedded pellets, no problem, removed with a thorn or pen knife, unsterilised. Teachers that gained your attention by throwing a blackboard duster at your head, beatings from the same, dealt out with canes and rubber pipes. We learnt to deal with the upsets of life, unaided, and survived. Were they good times? Oh yes, great times.

Communication by word of mouth, no cell phones, computers, emails, SMS s, and the likes. Two tins and a piece of string, never worked that well, it being easier to shout.

Did we survive? Yes we're still here, with the mind and thoughts of a twenty year old, and the body, not so young and no longer so able. But the good memories surpass the aches and pains of old age.

“It is a curse this disease called old age.”

Thanks Alfred, some articles like this one, just start, almost by themselves, and have no pre-planning. I cant even remember what got this one started. Probably a good dream and a bad ache, but when I sat in front of the computer it was out and finished in record time, not a usual occurrence, I loved writing this one.

I am sure most of us can remember someone that got hurt playing with all those dangerous things, like my boyfriends little sister who lost one eye when she and her brother were playing with knives.

Many hurt, but what great memories. times have changed and moved on, unfortunately never to return. I sometimes wonder how I would have handle things if I had been a Father in those times.
