Should We Drink Tap Water?

Twice, a year, we receive a water report, showing the contents of our drinking water and whether it is in compliance with EPA regulations. Usually, I quickly scan the contaminants listed and check, whether our water company is compliant. With this report, however, I took more time, carefully reading it.

I knew our water contained a lot of contaminants at supposedly safe levels, but I was surprised to see E. coli listed as one along with the usual chemicals; copper, nitrate, chromium, lead and a host of other chemicals.

E. coli…seriously? The water company says it’s perfectly safe because the levels are within the EPA standards. Even with all their reassurances, I still worried, and I started researching the safety of our country’s water supply; I was not thrilled with what I found.

Contaminants, unregulated by the EPA, flow through our water supply. Vitamins, narcotic pain relievers and psychotic drugs, blood pressure medications and antibiotics, to name a few, all swim undetected. With such a pharmaceutical stew, one wonders what dangers they pose. Even at low levels, how are they interacting with the medications we already take on a daily basis? Chemical interactions in small doses are deadly to many people. However, here we are with a toxic stew flowing through our bodies each time we drink a glass of water.

Just because you have a well, doesn’t mean you’re safe. Since wells are unregulated, you must have your own water tested regularly. In some areas throughout the country, over ten percent of the water wells contain arsenic levels above EPA regulation.

Even with all the contaminants found in our water, the United States has one of the safest water systems in the world. Water suppliers thoroughly filter water, adding chlorine to kill the various pathogens. The chlorine, while giving the water a bad taste, is safe in such small doses and there are things you can do to eliminate the chemical taste.

Home filtering systems can help with many water contaminants. There are a variety of options with water filters; from a faucet mounted to point-of-entry or whole- house filters, activated carbon to reverse-osmosis filters. All of these filters work well with a reverse-osmosis/UV combo filter being the best. The osmosis system filters out most regulated contaminants while the UV destroys the bacteria and microorganisms. However, they can be costly, ranging in price from $200 to over $2,000.

Everyone has an obligation to keep our water safe. Disposing of your trash properly and not littering our waterways, goes a long way toward keeping our water clean. When disposing of cleaning products, fertilizers and other chemicals follow EPA guidelines and never dump any type of drugs down the toilet.

If we all do our part, our drinking water will be safe for us and future generations.

Absolutely! What people seem to forget, our body makeup contains a large percentage of water which needs to be constantly replenished. Getting in the habit of drinking water regularly will make a difference in the way one feels.

Right on the topic! Water is so important for our lifes and well being, one should not forget it. While old civilizations gathered around clear water supplies, our civilization has lost that basic. Pure water means pure health. What was truth back then is truth today.

We try to filter our water but sometimes let it lapse. When I read the last report, I went out and bought a new filter.

I often wonder as I give my children a glass of tap water if the water I am giving them is safe. We use a Brita filter but I do not know how much of the contaminants are filtered by this filter. Something to research, thanks Nancy!
