What is Water?

Have you ever really asked yourself the question, what is water? Most people give a pretty simple answer when asked this question.

Think about it, 2 parts hydrogen and one part oxygen or in short form, H2O and bam, you have water. But is it really that simple?

In reality it is really the basic building blocks of life on our planet. The human body consists of 70 percent water, and without it life will cease to exist. We can go without a lot of things we think we must have in life but fresh water in not one of them.

Some facts many people just do not think about are that water covers 71 percent of the earths surface, and that while 96 percent of water on our planet is in the oceans, only about 2.5 percent is fresh water.

Out of that 2.5 percent 98.8 percent of fresh water is in the form of ground water and ice. less than 0.03 percent is in our atmosphere and rivers. In other words the recovery of clean fresh water is a slow process, and this fresh water is what we need to survive on this planet.

With about 2 billion people on our planet not having access to clean water and over that number without proper sanitation, one can come up with a pretty bleak outlook for any chance of us keeping a sustainable supply of our life's blood on hand.

This article is not for scaring anyone, or causing panic by any means, it is to educate as many people as possible about the need for the whole world to get on the right track and start practicing a more green approach to how we use this precious commodity.

If each person just becomes a little bit aware of where we could be headed it will do a huge amount of good in helping mother nature recover its fresh water supply and help to turn this around before it becomes an international crisis.

Lets be aware of what is going on with our factories, farming and storage practices, and lets all do our part in conserving a liquid we just can not live without!

One thing we can do is start using water filter purification systems in our homes and portable ones when travelling. This will help keep our heath issues at bay from contaminated water and at the same time help purify our waste water we are introducing back into the water supply.

I hope this article helps people become just a bit more aware of what we can do as individuals to help clean up our wonderful supply of clean water. The alternative is a place we just do not want to venture into!

HI Shawn..great stuff..this clean water...glad you are trying to educate people about it...There is a great island down here that is called by the locals "the last great place" but it is also a home for many palm tree and other Florida shrub nurseries. I could not live there for the reason of the pesticides they must put on these plants....The public water facility there uses a Reverse Osmosis treatment and the water tastes good but who knows....thanks katie

I grew up on my grandmother's small farm. We had ponds and rippling brooks where the most luscious watercress grew. As children, we would drink the water in that brook and eat the watercress. It was so clean. Now, I wouldn't dream of doing that. Things have changed.

Shawn, People are slowly poisoning themselves with progress. Fifty years ago my father took the family camping in the mountains. (It was one of the things to do during summer vacation) We got our water from the stream and drink it. No worries. Forty years ago, I went camping in the same area and would boil the water after getting it from the stream. Thirty years ago I went camping in the same place would boil the water, put iodine in it then drink it. Fifteen years ago, I packed in my own water. Five years ago the campground no longer existed and the stream had been rerouted to add water to a nearby reservoir. Now when I go day- hiking, I carry along a personal sized purifier kit along with a camel pack. I don't even give a thought of drinking out of any stream, anywhere at any time. It's safer that way.

Boy you said it all for me. Perfect example of where we are at today. I remember when i was a wee lad we could drink out of the local stream by the farm, now it runs through the treatment plant in town. acck!

We have been concerned about pollution since the 70's. Then, all of a sudden, around the year 2000, environmental science became "fuzzy science" because keeping the environment clean and safe can increase production costs for the polluters. I am not a tree hugger, but I am a water drinker and an air breather.
