Amazing Wonders Of The Ocean

The ocean has always fascinated me. I've always had lots of questions about it. After doing research, I've learned many things about our amazing ocean. The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the earth and directly and indirectly affects all life on earth. In reality, the world is one huge ocean broken here and there by islands, continents and other land masses. The ocean is so vast and deep that you can sail across it for days without seeing land.

The ocean is filled with life. Plants grow along the shore, on the ocean surface and serve as the basis of all animal life in the sea. A variety of animals live in the ocean. Some of them can only be seen under a microscope, others weigh a lot, some float on the ocean surface and some live on the ocean floor.

From a distance, the ocean seems calm and undisturbed, but in reality the ocean is never still. There are always waves.

Scientists have learned many things about the sea but there is still much they do not know about life in the sea and about the land beneath the sea. Although much have been learnt about the movements of the ocean waves, we are trying harder than ever to unlock the ocean's secrets.

The three great oceans of the world are in order based on size; the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. The ocean's greatest known depth is in the Puerto Rico trench, 28,374 feet below the ocean's surface. There is also the Artic and Antartic Ocean which are at two opposite sides of the earth. Ice covers much of the Artic Ocean during most of the year. The Antartic Ocean surrounds the continent of Antartica.

The surface temperature of the ocean ranges from about 28 F in the polar regions to about 86 F in the tropics. The greater the depth, the lower the temperature and in the deepest parts, it is near freezing. Water changes temperature slower than air and land, so it takes much longer for the sun to warm up the ocean than the land. The ocean conrtols the earth's climate because of the great area of the ocean. It helps keep the air from becoming too hot or too cold. The ocean also provides rainfall. As water evaporates from the ocean surface because of the sun's heat, it rises and form clouds.

Swimming in the ocean is easier than in a lake because saltwater contain about 3.5 per cent salt which helps a swimmer to float. Saltwater is not good to drink because it increases thirst and makes a person ill. The salty material in the sea is mostly common table salt.

All life in the ocean can be divided into three main groups: (1) the plankton, (2) the nekton and (3) benthos.

Delightful article. Brings up memories of walking on water's edge in the three great oceans. And swimming in and boating on them too. Feels sad though that we use our oceans as a vast dumping ground.

Nice one Barbara, I love the ocean, the smell of it as you get closer is so calming. The sound of it as you walk along the shore, even on stormy days while walking the dogs the ocean can be a magical place.
