So let me get this straight, a large multinational oil company wants to take the Karoo, possibly the most fragile environment on the planet, divide it up into little blocks essentially. And then drill down to about 5km, pump millions of litres of water mixed with a toxic cocktail of chemicals they refuse to divulge the contents of at unbelievably high pressures in order to break up the shale to allow the gas to escape to be siphoned off.
And they say that there is nothing that can go wrong, Ok they say that there is not much that can go wrong! They say that there are no documented cases of fracking accidents, ...maybe they say that there are no documented cases of serious fracking accidents. They obviously do not have access to the internet, maybe they live in China! Any spill of toxic chemicals of unknown composition in the Karoo is serious!
Oh! and they also say that gas is more environmentally friendly than oil! Well lets just look at that one for a minute! We take a fragile environment, truck millions of litres of water in, because there is not much water in the Karoo, as well as all the equipment and drilling rigs for potentially thousands of drill sites. Then we mix up our witches brew, and pump that together with the trucked in water and force it into the earth at extreme pressure! And this is more environmentally friendly than oil! And with the escaping gas a fair percentage of the now contaminated water is regurgitated out of the borehole, and we will store it in pits in the ground on the earth, but hey not all of it just about 20 – 30 %, because the rest we will reuse to pollute another hole nearby! So they say that all this activity will have No impact on the veld or the ground water! Ok maybe they say that all this activity will have little impact on the veld and ground water! Except for the water becoming inflammable and the veld being trucked into oblivion I suppose they might be right!
Anybody and everybody who has any interest in the welfare of the Karoo, or any other part of the planet where these people wish to strip-mine the earth in this fashion needs to be aware of what is going on and stand together and tell these companies to Get The frack out of the karoo!! or anywhere else you may be messing up the environment and the lives of the people living there.
sun and wind, they don't tap into that full tilt because it is clean renewable and debt free once the system is installed. Fraking is merely another way of tying the consumer to more debt at the expense of ......the planet? Good article David, posted in March 2012. Have you seen all the new evidence for health risks in relation to Fraking? Might be time to update. Of course none of the death or chronic sickness can be tied to the responsable corporate party....
I don't know anything about Karoo, but they do it in Taranaki New Zealand, no problems everything is good. Just thought I would mention it, but don't really want to get into it, as i know there is a lot of people against it.
David Great topic this just tells me and the rest of the world that business as usuall nothing changes we continue to rape the earth and expect no reprucussions...how nieve we are, or sorry very stupid we humans are. We watch weather patterns in the world turn around and bite in the ass. Winterless winters...early than usuall tornadoes, bigger and badder...more destruction...tsumani wipe out thousands of lives in and instant...nuclear disaster, could have been worst for the world, oh maybe next time, how many more are to be built?...just off the top of my head we need real change, I do not see it coming, we continue to use and pollute our envirnooment at an alarming rate, Canada thinks the oil from the oil sand will make our nation rich and powerful, he will makke our nation a black eye on the world..I could go on and on,I am so disgusted with the worlds response to global warning and the raping of the planet...Canada is shameless as are all the rest money rules and until it does not we are screwed...Just my take... Tim
Thanks Tim, it is true, we are really misusing the earths resources, and the big organisations especially continue to bribe governments to let them do it.
