Future World Without Aging

Life expectancy has increased from 20-30 years in ancient times to 70-80 years in modern times largely due to advances in science and technology which led to safer living conditions and improvements in diet and health care. Today, dramatic innovations continue, including, stem cell research, mapping the human genome, the integration of artificial intelligence into everyday life, 3-D printing, driverless cars, and promising new genetic treatments for chronic diseases. These advances in science and technology are predicted to continue to grow exponentially according to Dr. Ray Kurzweil, American author, computer scientist, inventor, futurist, and a director of engineering at Google.

Life Extension

The most revolutionary change on the research horizon is scientific life extension technology which may extend the human life span five-fold. Eventually the concept of human death may no longer be a reality. This dramatic breakthrough is being ushered in by genetic engineering, organ regeneration using stem cells and 3-D printing which will replace malfunctioning or damaged organs and micro-electronic implants to supplement failing or damaged brain and nervous system circuitry.

As the human life span increases dramatically, you can expect to witness major changes in all aspects of living including medical, social, economic, and political systems. Here are some significant changes to come.

Medical

Human disease and disability will disappear. Chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes will yield to new cures and failing organs will be replaced and supplemented by miniaturized computer technology driven by artificial intelligence. Paralyzed limbs will be reinvigorated by permanent implants. Cognitive deficits such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and memory impairments will be remedied by micro-circuitry and computer chip technology. Hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers will become increasingly automated with diagnosis and treatment managed by expert computer systems capable of learning from experience. Mental health centers will offer computerized reprogramming of dysfunctional learning and deletion of traumatic memories.

Social

Robots will assume the roles of laborers, personal assistants and companions.

As humans are needed less to labor in the world economy, they will be free to seek productive lives that maximize their creative potential and utilize their time to improve society.

Inequality and discrimination will become irrelevant and replaced by fairness, equal opportunity, and the complete assimilation of racial, cultural, and religious groups.

Education will be free. Redundant brick and mortar institutions will be replaced by self paced, computerized learning centers in every community where lectures by the world’s finest scholars and experts will be available on demand. College degrees will be replaced by demonstrations of competency. The complete, updatable, Google data base will be available by direct brain implant.

Crime will largely disappear as basic human needs are met and cognitive reprogramming for habitual criminals becomes routine. Major new offenses will be associated with unlicensed procreation and crimes against a fair and equitable world community.

Economic

Robotics will replace the manual labor in manufacturing, food production, and the maintenance of infrastructure. Military, law enforcement, and corrections will be largely managed using a combination of robotics, drones, cameras, GPS technology and satellite surveillance. Humans will provide oversight, supervision, and decision making for automated systems.

Modern food science, production, and distribution using genetically enhanced crops, green technology, hydroponics, and sustainable solar and wind energy will end hunger worldwide.

Clean energy, manufacturing, and public tranportation will stabilize climate change.

The monetary system will be replaced by digital currency. In an increasingly effective and automated economy, citizens of the world will be allocated a living stipend, adequate food, medical care and clean, safe housing.

No single person, family, business, or entity will accrue disproportionate individual fortunes due to a flat tax on earning, a graduated tax on consumption and incentives for reinvesting in the world economy.

Political

The politics of governance by wealth, special interest, and party divisiveness, will collapse in the wake of a true participatory democracy where social and economic needs are met. All citizens will be required to serve the country for several years.

Political unrest will dissipate as the world economy stabilizes. Countries will willingly join together to solve mutual problems and achieve common goals. Geo-political and cultural boundaries will dissolve and be replaced by a global community with unified governance.

The extension of the human life span will make interstellar space travel and migration to other galaxies and planets a practical reality.

Summary

Exponential growth in science and technology may extend the human life span five-fold and eventually end the concept of human death. Dramatic innovations in technology, medicine, politics, economics, and social life will see an end to chronic illness and disability, physical labor, inequality, poverty, hunger, ozone depletion, and war. A worldwide government will evolve based on a participatory democracy where all people will assimilate into a society based on the common good.

Good point Juan. However, I see a social evolution changing what is valued i.e. altruism will replace the self interest of today. The world population will be on a much more level playing field with basic needs met and free education. The value system will shift to a democratic world government for and of the people. The tax structure and laws will not favor hording and besides the smart robots won't support an elite class!

This article is an amazing gaze into the future James. You display an impressive grasp of vast areas of knowledge in evolving technologies... one thing I wonder about though. Given human nature's blind quest for personal power, how are we going to be protected from selfish personal self interest, or the self interest of the historical elite groups that have been with us for countless centuries...
