In 2008 I was trying to find organic, natural, green art supplies. to use on various art projects. Not only was the search time consuming, it didn't really get me the results I was looking for. Being a busy college student, I didn't have enough time to fully investigate this subject. I asked some of my fellow class mates and teachers, however I still did not find many environmentally friendly art supply companies. When I was lucky enough to finally locate an item it was usually quite expensive. This made me start thinking about using more natural products whenever possible.
After taking several art classes I realized many of the materials used in the processes were highly caustic. I didn't like the idea of toxic paints, solvents, thinners and cleaners being used without students being properly educated about alternative resources and proper clean up. I started thinking about what types of natural stains and dyes were used back before modern civilization.
"Let the change begin with me" has always been a good mantra to follow so I started looking at other art forms and materials. It just so happened that soon afterward I was introduced to weaving, the possibilities of recycled art and natural ceramics. Since then I have tried to use only environmentally friendly art supplies and stay away from highly toxic chemicals. I have not done enough research or taken the time to thoroughly read consumer comments on each of the companies who claim to be 'green" in order to leave a professional review at this time. I may do this in the future if there are enough people who are interested in purchasing more natural and organic art supplies.
I am currently using items such as paper bags, linen, raffia, hemp, copper wire and various other recycled materials in my art projects. From recycled art to ceramics, I find it a fun challenge to discover new ways of producing awesome art that leaves less of a carbon footprint. I still use Acrylic paint from time to time so I am trying to find some good products that are of high quality and still produce the same overall effect. I look forward to sharing more information with my readers as I learn more about all of the available alternatives.
Please feel free to check out my website to get a few idea on how to use paper bags for your next recycled art project.
Cheers!
