With problems like climate change and pollution making the headlines more and more, many people are people are looking to reduce their own carbon emissions. Those who advocate reducing carbon emissions say that this is an essential initiative to reduce the footprint that is being left for future generations. So what can be done to effectively reduce the amount of carbon that going into the atmosphere?

First of all, it should be stated that for any positive effect in reducing carbon emissions to be felt, every person has to do his/her share. It's also necessary for governments to introduce legislation which controls or limits how much carbon is going into the atmosphere.

Here are our top 5 tips on how to do this.

1. Swap light bulbs for more efficient ones. One study showed that in the US if every person in the changed their light bulbs to more energy efficient one, then the amount of electricity used to power lighting would be cut by half. It's commendable that some governments have taken a bold step and banned the production and sale of 100-watt light bulbs. This has forced manufacturers to re-think their strategy what type of light bulbs they produce and market. It also forces consumers, not only to change to more energy efficient light bulbs, but to also think more about their own carbon footprint. The most efficient alternative is LED bulbs, but these are expensive initially.

2. Lower red meat consumption. It is sometimes joked about the amount of methane gas that cattle give off. If the amount of cattle that is being farmed today compared with 20 or 30 years ago, we can begin to understand the problem. One study showed that the amount of methane gas emitted from the cattle needed to feed a standard family in a year is about the same as building and running a large 4WD vehicle. Of course, it doesn't mean that a person should become a vegetarian. It just means eating red meat in a balanced way. There are also added health benefits as well.

3. Unplug gadgets not being used. Any plug still connected to a socket uses a small amount of electricity - even if it is not powering anything! A person should make sure that chargers, TVs, computers are always unplugged when they are not being used. This can result in saving the average household around $100 a year. Of course, items like computers, laptops and TVs should always be powered off when not being used.

4. Switch to a laptop. It's not a well-know fact that laptops use less energy than desktops. So if possible, a person should think about switching away from a desktop computer. Although destops have become more energy-efficient, laptops are designed to run efficiently. Over the last few years monitors have become less energy hungry, but laptops still out-perform when it comes to desktops.

5. Use digital devices to read. Most studies on the effects of climate change will point to deforestation is a major cause of this. Over the past 20 years the amount of forests have been dramatically reduced. If possible a person should try to read books and newspapers on digital devices like tablets and eBook readers. Not all persons like these media devices, especially for reading, but in time a person will get used to this. If a person, however, decides that he/she needs the book or newspaper, then recycling is a must.

In order to reduce carbon and CO2 emissions it is needed that individuals and governments work together. Individuals should responsibility and support conservation activities and take even small steps to reduce their own carbon emissions. New laws are required to restrict the use and sale of inefficient methods of transport, as well as household and electrical items.
