Is Fitness Important for Survival?

When it comes to our very survival, we make sure that we have the necessary preparations of gear, skills and a plan in the event we may have to leave home. We make certain that we have out-of-state contacts, emergency food and water, hand crank radios, flashlights and various skill sets in order to ensure our very own survival.

At the end of the day, we prepare to survive and survival is our only concern with prepping. However, how important is fitness when it comes to survival? Is fitness a top priority prep, or is it something that we can completely forget altogether?

The Facts

If any emergency ever took place, for instance, on the scale of Katrina, would you be prepared to survive? Sure you may have gear, a bug out bag, survival skills and an impressive assortment of weapons, guns and ammunition, but would you be physically and mentally prepared? You see, many people tend to hoard guns, ammo and survival gear in hopes that it will outlast the disaster. This is not always the case.

As a matter of fact, it took almost several months for those in Katrina to be able to return back to their normal lives. During that time, there was crime at an epidemic rate. Murders, rapes, kidnappings, theft and home invasions were higher than ever before; mainly due to the fact that little to no law enforcement was present.

You see, fitness is more than physical preparation. As a marathon runner and bodybuilder, I know first hand that when it comes to either running 26.2 miles or deadlifting 5 times your bodyweight, most of that is 75% mental and 25% physical. Once you have prepared your body for the race that is ahead of you, the rest of the preparation and completion all lies within your mind.

Is fitness a priority for survival?

So when it comes right down to it, should us preppers and survivalists be concerned at all about our fitness? The answer is simple: YES! Physical fitness also prepares not only the body, but the mind, as well. Can you handle mental, physical AND emotional stress all at the same time?

Pushing yourself whether in the gym lifting weights, outside running or doing Insanity/P90X will all teach you how to handle mental stress and push beyond your limits. These are all priorities when it comes to your survival in an emergency situation.

Fitness is an important survival skill, so don't neglect it as a top priority in your preparation quest to survive.

Summary

The final conclusion is this: If you are a prepper who is preparing to survive an emergency situation and you have not made fitness a top priority, you are missing out on obtaining an INCREDIBLE advantage. When it comes to yours, your familiy and loved-ones' very survival, you don't want to find out that in an emergency you are not prepared to mentally or physically handle stress and are out of shape. If you are in shape, both mentally and physically, you gain a huge advantage. Any advantage when it comes to your preparedness is just another way of ensuring your survival in the long run.

Be safe. Prepare, thrive and survive, at any cost.
