The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the recent March 11, 2011 earthquake that hit Japan, to a 9.0 magnitude on March 14.  The earthquake that rocked Tohoku in northern Honshu, Japan, was originally estimated at an 8.9 on the Richter scale, caused a massive tsunami that drove large schools of fish to the shores of Mexico and caused evacuations as far away as Chile. Experts fear the number of deaths will climb to 10,000. The official number of people killed stands at over 2,000 while rescue searches continue and bodies wash ashore.  The USGS ranked the earthquake as the largest one to hit Japan since the invention of recording instruments for quakes 130 years ago. This earthquake is also now the fourth largest in the world since 1900.

Not only are the survivors living without water, heat and food, fears of a meltdown rise as three nuclear power plant reactors lose their cooling capacity. While experts evacuate all nearby areas and nervously watch this dangerous situation, rescuers from approximately 15 other countries including America, Russia and South Korea,  help with food, search dogs and heavy lift equipment in a race with time.  Hospitals that survived the devastating quake, feel overwhelmed with the scores of injured and the desperate need for supplies.  Japanese government has waived the strict cremation standards that normally require their permission to cremate the dead.  Crematoriums cannot keep up with the number of bodies as funerals await to happen in the midst of chaos.

Demand for gasoline is causing weary citizens to wait in line for up to five hours, while they live on what little food is available.  Instant noodles and rice balls are a precious commodity for them, but little comfort  as they grieve the loss of loved ones and homes. Tokyo's mayor has made a bold statement to the grieving community, calling this quake "a punishment from heaven" for Japan's greed.

Meanwhile,  earthquake aftershocks continue by the hundreds on the eastern Japan coast, putting the shaky survivors in fear of another tsunami.  A level 6 quake rumbled on March 15 alarming soldiers to yell at citizens to run to higher ground, but it  was later determined as a false alarm. Helicopters fly over the unbelievable sights of overturned ships in the ocean and on roads, viewing the vast devastation beyond description.

Many heartbroken survivors are giving up hope of finding loved ones and friends,  while they grieve the loss of their homes and normal lives just one day before the monster tragedy. While the rest of the world looks on in horror, other survivors of past earthquakes weep and relief organizations are busy gathering supplies to help the people of Japan.

My prayers go up for the Japanese people as I humbly attempt to help in this calamity. Please "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"  and if possible, send help through your choice of one of these relief organizations to help the struggling souls of Japan. There are no links for my gain or profit in this article, only sincere hope and  concern for all affected. Thank you and may your good works come back around to you someday.
