Locally Grown Produce

Hey everybody, I hope your doing your part by thinking green and taking small steps to a sustainable lifestyle.Today I am going to discuss another very effective way to contribute to sustainability, the local economy and your health, and that's by supporting locally grown produce.

Local crops

Local farmers take great pride in their crops and this shows in the quality of products they offer. Many are grown organically and free of the heavy chemicals used by large commercial growers. Try to find a local grower who uses eco-friendly processes and pays a fair wage to their employees.

If you buy local foods it will be much fresher that of food shipped from across the country in a cargo truck. Because locally grown reaches your table faster the quality and flavor of your food is amazing. The fresher it is the longer it lasts also. Any closer and you'll be picking the fruit yourself.

Just think of the possible chances of your food being contaminated by the time it reaches your local supermarket when shipped nationally. Going through more handlers means more risk of something going wrong. Buy local and your taste buds will thank you for it.

Decreases carbon

Obviously if food is being shipped from long-distances the impact to the environment will be greater than if the food is locally grown. And having a smaller carbon footprint is what eco-friendly is all about, especially with global warming and climate change threatening our planet.

Less fossil fuels being used is one of the best benefits we can get from keeping it in house. So go to your local farmers market and treat yourself to brand a new experience with food. At the same time help us all breath a little better by keeping high emission, fuel sucking trucks off the road.

Get to know your grower

Get a close up and more personal relationship with the grower himself, and you will discover a connection like none other. Also visit a restaurant in your city that features locally grown and grazed foods. By doing this you are putting the money into the hands of the locals instead of a corporation based in another state.

From grazed chickens, potatoes, tomatoes and eggs or a local winery, there are all sorts of opportunities for you to support locally grown produce and give your family healthy alternatives to the big box supermarkets. Go out and connect with these local food sources and get the money flowing in your neighborhood.
