Radiation Exposure - What Are The Effects And Things You Should Know

The recent exposure of radiation in Japan has left people asking many questions. How will effect me, how much is too much, and what do I need to know in case I am exposed to radiation. These questions raise a lot of concern to families across the world. Lets begin with exposure, then effects of radiation, then move into the top facts one must know in case of similar incident near their own home.

The "intensity of exposure"  in measured in units called millisieverts, or mSv for short. Experts claim that small doses given through medical applications, such as brain scans or x-ray scans, will cause no ill effects. In order for he body to get any effects there needs to be about 1,000 mSv sent into a persons body. A brain scan only gives off 25 mSv, so you can see how it's almost impossible to get any ill effects through medical attention. If exposure levels reach 5,000 mSv you are looking at about half of those exposed will die. 10,000 mSv will result in death in a few weeks, and in every case the person will die. Nuclear reactors are the most common place to find radiation exposed people, if there were some sort of accident anyone near the nuclear core would receive upwards of thousands of mSv's of radiation into their bodies.

Radiation illness is not something anyone should take lightly. Any exposure can increase your ability to get cancer, specifically leukemia, along with lung, thyroid and colon cancer. Risk of these cancers is proportional to the amount of radiation exposure. The more exposure the higher your chances of getting one of the listed cancers. Extreme radiation exposure could lead to the break down of the body's DNA, this of course being the worst case. High rates of exposure have also been known to cause bone marrow to stop making red and white blood vessels.

There are a few things you should know about radiation exposure so you can put your mind at ease. First fact is that radiation exposure happens everywhere. There are natural elements in soil that give off radiation, such as Uranium. This level of exposure is of no risk to your health and is usually ignored. Second fact, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention an average of 80 percent of radiation exposure comes from natural elements. The other 20 percent comes from man made devices such as the brain scan mentioned earlier. Next fact is about nuclear explosions, which troubles today's world since every country has nuclear weapons. If an explosion were to occur the surrounding area will be hit with such radiation exposure that surviving is very minimal. These people tend to develop Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) and signs are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin damage. If those who have ARS do not recover, they die in several months after the initial radiation exposure. Lastly, many local communities have an action plan in case such a disaster were to occur. You should check with your local community to see if they have anything planned.

Many people are also curious about ways they can treat radiation exposure if it occurs to them. Well there are ways to treat yourself, unfortunately the pill they have must be taken beforehand. Don't worry as the pills are potassium iodine and are usually distributed by the local government if the suspected radiation exposure is about 100 milligray, a unit named after a British physicist. If you are exposed it is highly advised to take off your clothes and wash your hair immediately. There are some drugs that help boost your immunity system and will help regain the lost blood cells.

I hope you enjoyed my article on radiation exposure and now have a better understanding about it. It's never too late to prepare yourself for any type of disaster, as long as you have the proper information. You can find more informational articles and more by looking at my other directories.
