White Kiwis Are on their Way!

New Zealand's national symbol, kiwi, has gained a huge popularity this year as far as a second white representative was born on December. Despite the fact that it appeared in national captivity it has already achieved resonance fame all over the world due to its rare color.

The first one Kiwi chick of a rare white color appeared on May 24th in front of New Zealand journalists at the National Centre for Wildlife near Wellington. This kid was named Manukura, which in translation from the Maori language means "the status of the leader." Manukura is not albino, but it has unparticular color of feathers, which are usually brown and more like wool.

But let's get back to the second one, which is considered by New Zealand zoologists as a Christmas gift. By decision of the local Maori this newly-born kiwi received the nickname of Mauriora, which means "sustained life". It is assumed that parents of both chicks are the same, and, in addition, it is mother's benefit to possess a rare recessive gene for white feathers.

A peculiar species require also a description of their distinctive features. Hence, there are some fascinating features about kiwi:

1.Kiwi species (let's hope including whgite ones) might live up to 60 years.

2.Kiwis form their pairs for a whole lifetime. However, more than half of the year male and female do not live in a close contact and generally do not share the nest. In any case, there are a lot of nests on their sites.

3.Kiwis are extremely territorial. Each night a couple's whistle notifies the neighbors that the place is busy. Violation of the boundary leads to violent clashes and scuffle.

4.The ancestors of the kiwi were once able to fly. That is how they arrived in New Zealand from Australia. In the absence of mammalian predators and ground-based proto-kiwis eventually forgotten how to fly and became exclusively terrestrial beings. Their wings are so rudimentary that modern kiwi is completely lost in long loose feathers of the body. They can be felt only by grasping the bird by the side (which is prohibited by New Zealand law).

5.Kiwi species have weak eyesight, but excellent sense of smell (quite extraordinary for a bird) and the average body temperature of 38 degrees is two degrees lower than that of other birds.

6.Kiwi is an endangered species that lives only in New Zealand. The wings of this bird are not well developed, but very strong legs and a sensitive sense of smell is an advantage.

7.The facts about birds of kiwi will be accomplished by stating they hunt at night on insects and other small animals. Despite its seeming awkward appearance, the bird may bypass an area of several hectares at night, and the dark color rescues it from predators in contrast to our white heroes, which are not threatened in captivities they will be raised in.

That is also a conviction of experts from the National Centre for Wildlife, who have doubts and fears that because of its color, Manukura specifically will become a target of attacks. Generally, New Zealand is implementing a program saving kiwi. Birds are grown in nurseries and some of them are released into the wild, thus increasing the population of these animals, which are endemic to the country.
