Dressing Or Success At The Office: Why Dress Codes Are Still Important In Todays Workplace

Have you just landed a job in the corporate world, got recently promoted, or maybe you are just simply interested in how to look more professional at work?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you have got to consider dressing the part. Dressing up for success in any event does count, and this is as true as ever in the workplace.

What exactly does dressing up for success mean in the first place? Attire preference is as diversified as the kinds of people there are on the planet and so are their ideas on how to dress for success.

But in its very basic definition, dressing up for success means dressing up in a manner that allows you to look and feel determined, confident, and professional; and one of the first things your would-be colleagues, employers, and HR managers initially see.

The moment you finally decide on the perfect power suit, your first impulse is to head to the mall and start shopping! But hold your horses for a moment, you have to make sure you know the company's dress code lest you run the risk buying a piece you like but can't use.

Even though you think the company doesn't have a code for dressing up or you think you already know what their dress code is, it's always wiser check for specific clothing requirements, rules, or restrictions.

Almost all dress codes can be found in the employee handbooks which you can obtain from the staff in human resources or management.

Aside from merely checking out the dress code of your company, it is vital for you to heed it as well.

For one, the dress code of your company could get you into hot water. Say you wear a tight, short skirt with a high slit to match and a cleavage revealing blouse when you are the manager. Do you think your subordinates and clients will look up to you with respect?

Even when you didn't give too much thought about it during that time thinking it's JUST a dress, donning a misplaced get-up could end up in being issued a written memo or two or worse, termination from your position when you fall out of line with the company's objectives by the way you choose to dress.

It may stand to reason that their dress code is SO not you, but work is work, and the office is not one of those places where you can come as you are if you are otherwise.

There are always ways to look your best despite the uniformity and seeming drabness of the dress code. You can do things with your hairstyle, haircut, makeup, shoes, accessories, and perfume, even adjusting your uniform's cut and fit to suit you better as long as it doesn't go against their guidelines.

Sticking to a dress code maintains an air of professionalism in the work place and encourages everyone to treat each another with fitting respect.

In a free country where anything goes, first impressions still last. A dress code is necessary in the office be it in a small one a large corporation.

When you take care to dress the part, you also take care of your image and the organization which you work for.
