The Difference Between Telemarketing And Market Research

In the time that I have worked for a Market research company, and talking to people on the phone, I have noticed that some people get telemarketing and market research mixed up. They think market research is telemarketing, and telemarketing is market research. I find myself trying to correct them before they hang up on me, but it always fails.

There is a big difference between telemarketing and market research. Telemarketing is when people try to get you to buy what they are selling. Market research is data collection. When a person calls you and asks if you are willing to do a survey, they want your opinions on the questions they ask you.

I notice when I am talking to someone on the phone, the first thing they ask me is, am I selling anything. I explain to them that I am not selling anything, but want to know if they have time to do a survey. Some will do it and some won't. Some people won't do it, because they don't know what the survey is about, and the interviewer is not allowed to give details on the survey. So they wind up hanging up.

The Laws Of Telemarketing

Every state has laws set for telemarketing companies. They can call, but when the customer is asked to get put on a do not call list, telemarketers are to respect their wishes and place them on the do not call list. Telemarketers are not allowed to harass the people. The company can face a harassment suit. There is a cut off time to when they cannot call. At 9:30 pm, telemarketers are not allowed to call customers. Other than the companies do not call list, the state in which you live, have their own do not call registry.

The Laws of Market Research

The law for market research businesses is different. There are so many market research companies that you really don't know which company called. Market research companies have their own do not call lists. You have to ask them to put you on that list. The problem with that is, sometimes when a person is rude to the interviewer, the interviewer will not put the person on the do not call list, just to get back at them. You wind up receiving the calls again. If you don't ask to be on the do not call list, you will continue to get those calls. Remember the names of the companies you are requesting because there are a lot of market research companies, that you will think its the same company. I never knew of a set time that market research companies are to stop calling.

They go by the standard times. Eastern Standard, mountain, pacific, and central. So when it gets late, the computer automatically goes into the next time frame. By the end of the night it would be calling people who are in mountain time. I don't know if states have a do not call registry for market research companies. Maybe they should have a do not call list registry in every state.

I only gave a brief description in the laws for telemarketing companies and market research companies. It is up to you to do more research in the state that you live in. I hope this has helped some people out.
