Age Appropriate Workouts

It may be a strange concept to think of your child working out, in fact, an age appropriate work out doesn't even need to seem like a work out. Kids just want to have a bit of fun, and you can quite easily mask moderate to intense physical activity in a fun game like tag in the back garden.

If you're having trouble thinking of what you can do with your children, I've put together some activities that correspond with age appropriate workouts.

Babies – They need our constant undivided attention, so where do you find the time to exercise you ask? Brisk walks with a pram or stroller should be enough to get your heart rate high enough for a lengthy amount of time to class it as exercise. Many gym's these days do baby boot camps or even post pregnancy exercise classes.

Infants – At this age kids are much more excitable and much easier to engage in physical activity, putting music on and having a dance in the front room, or going to the park and using climbing apparatus. Usually this age is good to teach your kids to ride a bike, or have your child on your bike with you on a child's seat.

Juniors – When kids reach this age there is a whole choice of activities they can enjoy. Teamed football matches, swimming, tennis, gymnastics, child-parent kick boxing or even simple games like tag or skipping ropes.

Adolescents – As with juniors there are many activities teenagers can be doing, including contact sports as said earlier, plus fun athletic activities with your children at this age can be a good bonding experience. Going for walks or even a trip to the supermarket are good starting points.

Take Precautions: Recent estimates have outlined that around 50% of accidents that occur during sport activities for kids could have been avoided if the proper precautions were put in place. When taking precautions during sports you must think about the correct use of equipment, the maintenance of safe playing areas, the right amount of adult supervision during activities and the correct amount of training your child should receive before actively taking part in a sport or activity.

As exercise starts to become natural habit for your family, it can start to encourage healthy nutrition and eating habits. Good nutrition provides the resources your body needs to physically exert itself, and the healthier your family feels, the easier exercising together becomes.
