Aim for Gold When it Comes to Your Health!

The Olympics presents an opportunity to witness individuals who are health extremists. These are people who somehow find the motivation and drive to exercise to the point of perfection. What internal drivers allow these athletes to stay the healthy course guiding them to the Olympic Games? If we can figure this out, we will have an instant advantage in determining how we can clear our path to better health. Let’s consider various factors in determining the recipe for success:

Power of Choice: There is a great deal of power in realizing you have choices and in giving yourself permission to make healthy choices. Olympic athletes have made the decision to be the best they can be and their circle of life revolves around these goals. You are as important as all members of your family, as you run your son to soccer or your daughter to basketball; do not lose sight of the fact that this was not physical exercise for you. Just as the athletes have made choices, you must take ownership in the choice to move forward and make your day healthy as well. This may mean you must do some super planning to be certain your day has some form of exercise/activity in it.

Clarify Your Goals: An Olympic athlete has tunnel vision when it comes to what they want. Pie in the sky for the majority of them would be to stand on the podium and accept a gold medal. Life is too short to be unclear on our vision of who we want to be and how we want to express our health. Most of the time, health does not come naturally. We have too many obstacles that distract us at times so it often takes a concerted effort to set realistic goals as it relates to our daily functioning. To some this may be planning a weight loss goal, a physical exercise plan, and a nutrition overhaul and even may include time for nothing. Imagine a goal of doing nothing for 15 minutes a day, no television, no computer work and no housework. Just time to be in the moment and get comfort in simply existing.

A Day at A Time: This age old adage is so fitting and applicable as we try to make healthy adaptations in our life. Most of us are not going to be Olympic athletes and will never grace the Olympic podium. It is okay if we fall of the podium of life one day and get back on it the next. The Olympics is a wonderful motivator for all of us as we celebrate the games and what they represent. Let the motivation and hope we witness stay with us to exhort, nurture and empower you as you continue to grow healthier one day at a time.

Congratulations to all the talented, dedicated Olympians so proudly representing their respective countries. The spirit of international goodwill and peace has inspired us this summer to reach for our own perfect place as it relates to our health.
