Breathing Properly, Helps Lifting And Cardio

Breathing properly is a really important concept to grasp when your in the gym. It is something that will not directly make you bigger but it helps you when you are lifting, giving you more potential to get yourself bigger. You see when you breath, in short you oxygenate your muscles giving them energy to give you that extra push. This is going to help you push out a few more reps, help move weight regardless especially heavier weight. It will also help you pushing out your last rep so you don't end up giving up. So you can think of breathing as extra energy, giving you extra potential. This is almost like how a pre-workout or caffeine supplement won't directly make you bigger, but it will give you some extra potential.

So what is proper breathing then? Proper breathing is breathing on every rep with the rep to help you push your weight. Sounds simple but it actually isn't and the more physically exerting an exercise the more or the quicker the breathing is required. In other words light weight workouts will not require a lot of breathing, where as heavier weighted exercises will require more breathing. You will really notice the difference when your breathing properly with heavy weight workouts, you feel that you actually lift a bit easier through proper breathing.

There are two different ways you can be breathing, one is the right way and the other is the wrong way but both are natural forms of breathing. The first one is the wrong way, I like to call this one mechanical breathing. This is where someone will breath more in large bursts rather than naturally throughout the push. The breathing happens either before the lift or after, that is the important part, they breath prior or after as opposed to with. Half of their lifting they are holding their breath. There is usually a lot of shaking and their face usually gets really red from holding their breath. This way is wrong because the breathing isn't actually helping their push as much as it could because they are not breathing efficiently.

Breathing Properly.

The other way I like to call natural breathing or breathing properly. This kind of breathing actually helps and assists you in your lifting and allows you to lift longer than if you were to hold your breath. In this one you are breathing throughout the whole lift. Every time you lift concentrically (positive portion of lifting, contraction, tense up/use muscles, raising part of exercise) you want to be breathing out. Every time you lift eccentrically(negative portion of lifting, relax, lowering part of exercise) you want to be breathing in. You breath out for the full concentric part of the contraction and you breath in for the full eccentric part of the contraction. This is so you are breathing with your entire lift as opposed to after/before only. It helps you get used to it by closing your eyes and focusing solely on your breathing as your doing your exercise, remembering on contraction breath out, on relaxation breath in.
