Calories Burned Jumping Rope

What exercise burns 50 -60 calories every five minutes? Believe it or not, it's jumping rope. Doing an eight minute mile is equivalent to the calories burned jumping rope in the same time. Can you believe that? It's not just an exercise for school girls.

As a mater of fact, many athletes, boxers, and mixed martial artists use the jump rope to increase endurance and cardiovascular strength, to become more agile and coordinated, and to burn calories. It's also is a great upper and lower body strength builder. It does all of that and it costs less than thirty dollars for the equipment. Who needs a treadmill, right?

Jumping rope is high impact on the knees, ankles, and feet. However, jumping rope has less impact on your joints than jogging. If it is done right, it's actually one of the safetest exercises to perform. I do suggest that you invest in a good pair of sneakers.

Many people ask, can it really burn calories like that, and if so, why don't more people do it? The first question I ask you is, have you jumped rope in a while? If so, you will know it's much harder than what it seems. I challenge people to jump rope consistently for 5 minutes straight. After about 2 minutes in, they'll start tripping over the rope.

I actually do recommend a book written by one of the leading experts in jumping rope, Buddy Lee. Buddy Lee's, Jump Rope Training is an excellent book on the subject. If you are serious about the way you look and about bettering your health, you should get this book.

How to jump rope?

Since you can't jump rope for the same consistent time, like jogging or walking on a treadmill, it's more than okay to jump rope in intervals. Personally, I count my reps and take 30 second breaks in between. Starting out, shoot for a goal like 300-500 skips and then challenge yourself from there.

It's important to choose the right rope before you start your program and learn how to jump rope. Bypass the nylon ropes. You really want to get a rope that has some weight to it. You can start with a plastic speed rope or beaded rope, but I suggest to invest in a good 2 lbs. rope as more of a beginner rope. Intermediate users will need to go for a 4 Ibs. rope, and for advanced users, I recommend a 6 lbs rope. Do yourself a favor, always start with the 2 lbs. rope. You may be in descent cardio shape but jumping rope is a new ballgame if you're not use to it. Incorporate with a weight training program and you are well on your way to a whole new you.

Jumping rope is a great way to achieve some fitness goals but it's also great for your heart. Think of it as an insurance policy and get to jumping soon.
