Can Bodyweight Exercises Make You Stronger?

Looking at the way the fitness industry tells people how they can get stronger they ignore the power of bodyweight exercises. Just look at any fitness magazine... You'll see routines, articles and pictures talking about why the X free weight move or the Y machine exercise will get you packing on muscle and make you insanely strong. Well these exercises are just as good to build up strength. Do you think the Greeks and Romans have all this scientific data and fancy gym equipment? No of course not, so can bodyweight exercises make you stronger? Of course they can!

A couple thousand years ago people didn't have posh machines like Bowflex and all the other fancy multi-gyms. They had massive rocks they would drag around and lift and of course, their own bodies. They knew that eating right, dedication, determination and putting in the work would get them the muscle needed. A gladiator in Rome had to be strong for their fights if they were going to survive...

Anyway, enough of the bad history lesson :)

My point is, some of the best bodyweight exercises are fantastic for building strength and can do so just as well, if not better, than traditional gym base exercises and routines. There are people around the world who have dedicated their lives to this sort of training, they call themselves "Bar Athletes."

There is no better exercise to get a strong back than the pull up, a fantastic exercise. This exercise has been used for centuries to get than wonderful v-shape that defines a strong looking back. You can increase the difficulty of the move by adding extra weight with a weight belt, but it's still a bodyweight exercise. Most of these exercises can we made more difficult adding weight.

To build strength, the same principles that apply to a gym routine, apply to a bodyweight workout. You are trying to recruit as many muscle fibers as possible and exhaust them. This is why a lot of the time adding weight would be beneficial. A bodyweight squat can build amazing leg power. You can do standard squats but most people won't find them too difficult. Add a backpack with 10kg in there and try doing jumping squats getting your "ass to the grass" would certainly be more difficult and build strength and muscle.

The most important part of any exercise routine is using the right exercises. You want exercises that will engage as many muscle fibers possible. Add extra weight to them by adding weight in a backpack or build your own sandbag and use that.

So, can these exercises make you stronger? Yes! Can bodyweight exercises get you ripped? Yes! You can need to put in the effort and attack your workouts properly and you'll achieve amazing results.
