Compression Shorts Or Not?

Compression shorts are athletic apparel that according to experts are used to create separation between the

groin muscles and the hamstrings (say what!). In plain language by wearing compression shorts it may help you not get sciatica or if you do it may help you on your run. Some people wear them for an extra layer of warmth. Others wear them to guard against getting rashes ( my #1 reason for wearing them). The shorts are made with a wicking material that helps take moisture away from your body which helps keep you dry and reduces the potential for chafing.

Some athletes believe that compression shorts actually improve their performance. For me my athletic performance has improved since I don't have to take time off and nurse the god awful rash I use to get when running. I've also found out that compression shorts are often recommended by physical therapists to patients who suffer from sciatica. I've never had this condition but I know people who have and they say it can be quite debilitating.

Now some people wear them all by themselves or with a pair of running shorts over them. My preference is to wear a pair of compression shorts covered with a lightweight pair of shorts. I hear some people say "how can they just wear those tight fitting shorts and nothing over them". Some should not be caught dead just wearing the compression shorts but if that's what gets them out there to run I say "who cares".

To measure yourself to find out what size you would wear, first get a measuring tape and wrap it around your waist just underneath your stomach but above your hips. Make sure the tape is in full contact with your skin all the way around your waist. Read the measurement on the tape. If your waist is 28-32 inches your size is small. If your waist is 32-36 inches your size is medium. Large is 36-40 inches, X-Large is 40-44 inches. If your bigger than that than your just out of luck (just kidding) there are places that sell compression shorts for guys with the bigger waist.

So as you can see that are reasons to wear compression shorts, both medically and personally. Don't worry if you don't have a pair initially especially if you are just starting out because starting out you should go easy to begin with. I would make it a priority though because before you know it you'll be going harder and farther and it won't be that long before you are there. See you out there!
