Do Sit Ups Help Get Six Pack Abs?

It may appear to be a question with an obvious answer. However, the explanation that I am going to give here may surprise you. That is if your answer was 'yes'. I have already covered the best and most effective ways of achieving six pack abdominals in previous articles, and on my website. However, in this article I am going to

discuss why I believe that the sit up and crunch (especially performing a large quantity of them) is quite possibly the worst thing you can do as part of your workout routine. So do sit ups help get six pack abs? I propse that the answer is 'no'. Well, not without risk of injuries at least.

I always make clear when talking about developing abs, the importance of burning fat to reveal your six pack. This is the most important thing. I will not go over this ground again here, but it is safe to say that many people put far too much emphasis on abdominal specific exercises, rather than eating a very clean diet and doing more effective workouts that raise your metabolism and burn fat whilst strengthening the core. Therefore, any abdominal specific exercise should be seen as an extra, to put the finishing touches to your six pack. When it comes to this, there are far more effective and powerful exercises than the sit up.

The problem with the sit up is that it doesn't really target your abdominals in the best way. In fact, due to the actual sitting up motion one performs whilst doing a sit up, the hip flexors are targeted more thean the six pack. I am sure that many of you have tried doing sit ups before and thought 'this doesn't feel like I am really working my abs'. That's because you are not. You will probably feel more of a workout doing this exercise in your legs and hips, not the abs.

Like wise, the crunch has certain drawbacks too. Whilst slightly more effective at targeting the abdominal muscles rather than the hip flexors, there are certain health issues associated with the crunch. Performing a very large number of crunches, like so many people do, in their quest for six pack abs, could cause you to suffer from back problems in the long run.

“We stopped teaching people to do crunches a long, long time ago,” says Dr. Richard Guyer, president of the Texas Back Institute. This is due to the “full flex” movement. The actual “crunch” part of the exercise puts an unhealthy strain on your back at its weakest point. The section with the most nerves (and most potential for nerve damage) is in the back of the spine, which is the very part that bends and strains during a sit up or crunch.

There are, far more effective abdominal exercises out there aside from the sit up or crunch which will pull your abdominal muscles in, strengthen your core and give you that six pack look. Far better alternatives to sit ups and crunches include, knee or leg raises, the plank (and its variations) and air bike etc. Performing exercises such as the above at the end of your normal workout routine (such as high intensity cardio and strength training) will dramatically improve your overall results and increase your chances of getting that six pack look you have always wanted.
