Electric Bike Kits A Cheaper Alternative
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

You may have heard recently that there is a real move toward electric vehicles, especially bicycles. There's a good reason for this. There are just so many benefits to owning one. You have the freedom and fun of cycling (an exercise that does not involve the body-jarring pounding of jogging) with the convenience of an efficient form of commuter vehicle that frees you from the drudgery of traffic jams. They are cheap to run, will carry considerable loads and are much better for the environment than our gas guzzling cars.

The only thing that might make you think twice is the price. To get a good bike that will last and is efficient, will cost more than a cheap knockabout bike that a lot of us buy to take the occasional cycle ride with the family. Enter the bicycle conversion kit. That old bike that has been sitting in the garage, only seeing the light of day on special occasions, can be given a new lease of life by fitting it with an electric conversion kit. These kits are relatively cheap, easy to fit, and because you fitted it yourself, can be removed just as easily if you find you don't like it.

Once fitted, these conversion kits will change your relationship with your bike. Pre-kit, you may have promised yourself repeatedly that you will start riding to work or to the shops instead of jumping in the car to take the ten-minute trip. But those few nasty hills between your home and your workplace or the shops have convinced you that you will start one day, just not today.

Riding your bike with one of these kits installed is a great experience, almost like having a second person on the bike with you, helping you up the hills, or just giving you a free ride as you enjoy the scenery. It’s a great feeling! And pay no notice at all to people that tell you its a lazy way to ride. Its not. It will more than likely get you out on your bike a lot more than before the kit was fitted. And even if you are putting in less effort than you would on a normal bike, it is much better than leaving it in the garage and taking the car as you used to do. Plus the fact that just because your bike now has an electric motor fitted doesn't mean you have to use it. You can tootle around on your bike as normal, only engaging the motor when you feel you need a little assistance. In other words, you get as much or as little exercise as you want.

There are different types of kit to choose from, and the differences can mean degrees of difficulty in installation. Some come complete with a front or rear wheel with the motor installed in the hub, so it is a simple case of slipping the wheel on, securing a couple of wires, a hand grip and battery pack and you’re good to go. Others come as a separate motor component so you can custom fit your spokes and wheel rim. On the subject of cost; an average starting price would be around $399 give or take for a lead acid battery version, or more for the far superior lithium-ion battery version.  As an example of running costs, one of my bikes which is a custom made e-bike with a 250 watt motor and lithium-ion battery (highly recommended) costs around five cents to fully charge and goes a long way on that charge. Obviously, the more pedaling you do yourself, the further each charge will take you, but on average it will cost me around twenty five dollars a week in fuel to drive to work, plus the wear and tear on my car, or around twenty five cents a week to pedal my E-bike to work.

I'm healthier, my wallet is healthier, and the planet is healthier. What more is there to say? Happy cycling!
