Excuses You Might Give For Not Starting A Running Program
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Perhaps you have wanted to start running. You have friends, family, and coworkers who run, and they have told you how great they feel after a workout. You have listened intently as they talked, but you keep making excuses to avoid discovering running for yourself.

One thing you might tell yourself is that running might cause you to get hurt. This is true. You can get hurt by running, but you can also get hurt doing other activities. You might get splattered with hot grease while you are cooking, for example, but your injury does not stop you from cooking and eating the foods that you love. If you do get burned, you simply run your hand under cold running water to relieve the burning, and then you continue cooking. The fear of injury is not the only reason you may give for not beginning a running program, however.

Another thing you may tell yourself is that running will make you tired. If you begin running, however, you will likely discover that it will energize you. You can then use the energy for work that you need to do. You can study for your upcoming test, fix dinner, or clean the house. If your day includes a run, you will likely sleep very well that night, rather than lying awake, tossing, and turning.

Third, you might tell yourself that you are not coordinated enough to run. Chances are, however, that you have run before. You may have run to escape danger or while participating in races with others. If you have engaged in these running activities, you can run again. There is also one other excuse that you might give for not starting running: you do not have time.

"I do not have time" is a classic excuse that many people give when they do not want to do something. If you want to run, you can fit the activity into your day. You might run in the morning before leaving for work or school, for example. Listen to the quiet around you, and enjoy the sound of your feet hitting the pavement. You might run in the afternoon or evening, after your day has ended. At these times of day, you can enjoy the presence of others. You might even hear a favorite song from a passing car, which will make your run more fun.

You do not have to run very long or go very far. Just a few minutes of this activity can make a big difference in how you feel.
