Family Fitness, Can A Walking Routine Really Bring Your Family Closer Together?!?

Family fitness has become a hot topic in recent years. We are all looking to get our families healthy and to come away from the Dr. with a clean bill of health. While this all sounds great and wonderful and we know we should be doing it, often times, life gets in the way. Sounds sort of silly, doesn’t it? We are busy going to this practice or that dance class or the kids have homework and Scout meetings. We owe it to ourselves and our families to take the time to slow things down a bit and find quality family fitness time. I know I want my family functioning at their absolute best. And, I’m sure you do too. So, promise me. No excuses. Grab your beautiful family and take action on your own personal family exercise plan. You’ll thank me later. 8-)

Here is what my family set in motion as our family fitness plan. We chose together to do a walking plan and here’s why. There are many benefits to walking; exercise, weight loss, taking in your surroundings and stress relief, to name a few. One of my favorite reasons for walking is that my family has turned it into a family bonding activity. Even if it's only for a short time, a few days a week, it gives us time to unplug from technology and all the distractions of the world and to really focus on each other. Imagine my shock at how much my teenager enjoys our family fitness walks. He's usually the first one to remind us about it. If you own a teenager, you’ll know how shocking that little gesture is. Our kids will sometimes take their bikes or skateboards along, but most often they like to walk with us. Our dog even enjoys our family walking time. He's ecstatic when he sees his leash. 8-)

We take different routes throughout our neighborhood and often we'll let our kids choose the path. Between you and me, the main reason that we started our family walking plan was to get our family moving and exercising without actually feeling like it was exercise. You know, sort of sneaky?!? But what we have gained is so much more than that. We’ve gotten true quality time as a family and a chance to get back in touch with each other emotionally. This has been the true blessing of my family's walking routine, along with all the health benefits and of course, getting back into my skinnier jeans.

I hope this article will give you some inspiration as to one way to bring your family closer together and get some exercise at the same time. It’s so very important to find the time, any amount of time, to get some family fitness squeezed in. For my family, it’s walking, but there are so many options out there, that I’m positive your family will find your “thing." Remember, no excuses. Give it a go today and you’ll be so happy that you did . You’ll be amazed at how much closer your family becomes because of it.
