Fat Burning Cardio

Do you know that a boxer can run with the Kenyans? Although maybe not the same long distance running speed like the Kenyans, since it takes years to develop, but a boxer can cover a long distance dominated by the Kenyans. In fact a top boxer can even perform a grueling workout at the finish line.

What is the first thing that comes into your mind when you hear cardio exercise? Me, I always associate cardio exercise with fat loss.

Here are the benefits of fat burning cardio:

  • strong heart and lungs
  • increased metabolism (which helps with weight loss)
  • restful sleep
  • reduced stress
  • increased energy

Having a good cardio could also be a life-saver. Many survival stories of people adrift at sea for many days without food, water and rest, but survived because, aside from their iron will, they are physically fit and have a good stamina that makes them survive up to the limits of human endurance.

Today, I will feature a cardio exercise that is also good for self defense – boxing. One good thing about boxing is that anyone can carry out this exercise – even if you are overweight (since you won’t carry any weight except your arms and you can stop punching whenever you’re tired).

The number of muscles used when you punch is best described on how to execute proper punching, whether you throw a hook, jab, straight, cross, or uppercut. When you throw a punch, the force should come from your feet, going up your legs into your hips and core muscles, and then to your arms through your chest and shoulder muscles, and finally the force of energy is released in your punch. Relax your entire arm as you deliver the punch to make it more powerful. Since you use your whole body as leverage, your punching power should be at least equivalent to your body weight. Boxing is a great weight loss exercise for your whole body. If you know how to punch properly, your punch is quicker than the one who does not know the technique.

If you are looking for a rapid weight loss, boxing is a good choice. A boxer can burn up to 650 calories in a 60-minute boxing workout. However, if you are new to boxing, you will need professional assistance to guide you on how to do it properly, in order to avoid the risk of injury, especially when punching on heavy bag.

One of the favorite routines in boxing is called “shadowboxing”, where a boxer works his rhythm by using foot-work and punching the air – just like dancing or “kata” in karate. Shadowboxing is an intense workout that even a very fit person will have full-size sweats after doing it for just three minutes. And if you can do three rounds of three-minute shadowboxing, you can easily finish a 5 kilometer run.

Other fat burning cardio workouts are:

  • running
  • swimming
  • cycling
  • renegade rows
  • mountain climbers
  • squat jumps
  • walking lunges

Although boxing is arguably considered as top cardio workout, since boxers get their total cardio build up by adding up a variety of exercises, it is definitely one of the good choices in weight loss.

I love fitness articles because I am all about health and fitness in any form. I work out regularly as well. Believe it or not I'm one of those people who is always trying to add on a pound - a pound of muscle that is. I'm such a hard gainer. My friends laugh at me and think I am nuts. Thanks for the great article.

Thanks so much...and don't forget how good you feel if you take out your frustrations kicking a bag instead of losing your temper!

Hi Jane! Yes, punching bag is a good stress reliever. And definitely better than punching the wall when losing temper.
