Four Highly Recommended Pedometers

The beauty of pedometers (step counters) is that they are great little tools for measuring your activity level, tracking your exercise goals, and keeping you motivated to “keep on keeping on.” All you do is strap on that little walking wonder and step, step, step. Of course if you don’t like things attached to your waist, there are pedometers that can attach to other locations.

Pedometers can also measure calories, count miles, and keep a short 7-day history of your work-outs; depending on which kind you buy. They can range in price from $8.00 to $50.00 or more. And the more expensive the ped, the more there might be to learn about it in order to work it.

In this article I’m only going to tell you about four different pedometers, from most expensive to least expensive, and I’ll give you a main overview and of each one.

First off, there are two kinds of pedometers: those that use spring suspended lever arms and those that use accelerometers. The ones that use accelerometers are more expensive, have more features, and are generally more accurate. The ones that use lever arms, while less expensive, still give good functionality for the price.

Omron HJ-112 Pedometer

This particular pedometer has an advanced design which permits you to wear it or carry it in your pocket, which gives you a lot more freedom of movement. It's only requisite is that it be perpendicular to the ground. It has a host of capabilities--it can count steps, calculate distance, and indicate calories burned. On top of that it also can track aerobic-type steps separately when you're doing more than sixty steps per minute. Its features include: seven day memory and silent operation. It retails for around $40, but can be found at Amazon for less. Plus it was rated almost five stars and had better than 3,000 reviews! One gentleman described it as the "gold standard among pedometers."

Sportline Fitness Pedometer 360

The Sportline Fitness 360 has excellent features and is both quiet and accurate. One of its coolest features is that it can show both distance and other data simultaneously. Here's a list of what it keeps track of: steps, calories, speed, steps-per-minute, time of day. I love the steps-per-minute feature because it clues me in to when I need to pick-up-the-pace. Sometimes I'm in the mood to know how long I've been walking because I don't wear a watch...no problem, my 360 can show me. And I never have to worry about losing it because the clip is very secure. Retails for about $28.00.

Sportline Pedometer 330

This ped only counts steps, but is a great starting pedometer at an inexpensive price. An excellent choice for anyone wanting to count their daily steps with minimal investment. The cover prevents you from accidentally resetting it. It’s rated tops for accuracy and reliability. Retails for about $15.00.

Sportline Basic Pedometer

You can also buy a basic Sportline pedometer at Walmart for around $8.00. It's spring-suspended, but it counts steps, miles and calories. That's what I bought to begin with and it works for basic walking and step counting. It's only disadvantage is the clicking sound it makes because of the counter mechanism, other than that, it's a pretty good starter pedometer.

So there are four to choose from: two under twenty-dollars and two over twenty-dollars. The first three on the list are highly recommened and have high ratings on Amazon, the last is still a good basic pedometer for beginners. Any one of them would be an excellent choice, it all comes down to what you want your pedometer to do.
