High Intensity Exercise Can Make Chemical Changes to Your Dna: Make Your Body Change the Way it Works

The scientific journals seem to be filled with absolute contradictions of one another. But, one thing seems to be unanimously agreed on: there are benefits from the high intensity workouts, including high intensity interval training./ In a new research study conducted in part by a molecular biologist and dedicated triathlete at the University of Copenhagen, high intensity workouts were found to virtually rewrite the human genetic code by changing certain chemical markers on the DNA chain and making the body work in a remarkably more efficient manner. The change to the markers make the body break down fats and sugars faster than usual, allowing for more impressive weight loss. The change is temporary.

The study was performed using a number of exercise participants of varying levels of ability. Researchers divided the exercisers into groups that were told to exercise to their very point of exhaustion. They were then asked to repeat the process twice more. In the second round of exercises, participants were asked to workout to around eighty percent of their maximum capacity, but were only asked to workout for thirty five minutes. For the last cycle, they were asked to workout at only forty percent of capacity but were asked to workout or more than one hour.

According to the researchers, the long and slow exercise caused absolutely no change in the chemical markers on the DNA at all while the other two options did show these changes. What it means to the average person depends on other factors. For most people, especially those who are using their genetics as an excuse to stay overweight, the study gives them the argument that they can override the body's own genetic code and the messages that it gets from them. Simply by increasing the intensity of the workout at least a few times a week, the average person can increase their metabolism and actually manage to lose weight.

The high intensity workouts have other benefits as well. While experts suggest that people workout at least five to six times a week, they do not have to be all effort- in fact, most suggest adding the high intensity workouts with the lower, slower workouts that are done the rest of the week. But, because high intensity workouts can often mean high impact, it is best to get a doctor's approval before starting and to understand the warning signs of pushing yourself too far. The point is to push beyond the comfort zone but to stop before the danger zone.
