Hooray for Summer Exercise

I know summer is winding down. But I can't tell you enough how great it is to exercise outdoors in the summertime. I belong to a rec center \which is open about 350 days per year. It is great to be able to exercise indoors when the weather is lousy. But, when the sun is shining I love to walk outside.

Most of the regulars at my rec center are there everyday. When I miss a day (I usually exercise 5 to 6 days per week), they ask me where I was. They look at me with a funny expression when I tell them I walked outdoors.I feel the same way toward them. How can they miss an opportunity to be outside exercising?

Three days a week I do go indoors because the weights and Nautilus style machines in my rec center. I don't believe in using weights every day. Every article on lifting I've ever read said to rest a day between using weights. So I am forced indoors three day per week.

I live near a 13 and1/2 mile section of a metropark system with a paved pathway which follows the path of a river. So this walkway is in a river valley. In addition to the fantastic scenery, there is also wildlife to be observed. Once I came upon a family of deer with the stag and doe and little ones resting in remote area. You won't see this in a gym.

Now if you know someone who walks at the same pace you do there is an added benefit to being outdoors. Engaging in a lively discussion while you are exercising can make the time go quickly.

I am preparing for the Susan G Komen Walk for the Cure. It will be held in two weeks. The best place to prepare for outdoor walk such as this is outdoors. I will walk the 5K. So today I did the three mile walk (approximately a 5K) in the park. There was no problem except I was not used to going that far in my walks. I usually do two miles and maybe a little more. I must admit, I felt sore after the three miles at a brisk pace. I proved to myself I can do it. I knew I could do it - just was not sure if I could keep up that pace for one hour.

When I was younger and jogging, I did 5Ks in less than 30 minutes. Now as a walker, I can go 3 miles is just less than one hour. The upside to this is I can still do it.

For walkers, the outdoors is the only place to be. Aren't treadmills boring? But thank goodness they are available in inclement weather.
