How Can I Loose Weight With An Elliptical Trainer?

As you know, losing weight can be very difficult. Finding the time, energy, and discipline to get proper exercise and to eat right can be a real challenge. I understand the feeling myself, as a father with two children, a career, and school on top of all of it. What I have found is that there are three simple things you can do to drastically increase your chances of loosing weight, even if you are extremely busy:

  1. Weigh yourself every day: Yes, I know this goes against a lot of the conventional advice. Your weight can fluctuate from day to day and the idea is that you may get discouraged if you don't see a decline each day. Or worse, your weight could go up! However, studies show that a daily trip to the scale is a huge indicator of success. This could be due to the fact that weighing yourself every day will create a subconscious reminder in your head to think about your decisions. This will lead to smarter decisions about food and exercise.
  2. Have workout equipment in the home: Having some kind of workout equipment at home, such as an elliptical trainer, is another major indicator of weight loss success. I think elliptical machines are extremely effective for this purpose, which I will discuss more in depth later. For now, know that having exercise equipment at home makes it much easier to use. In addition, it forms another subconscious reminder each time you look at it. Of course, keeping it somewhere where it will be seen often will help with this. And of course it is probably a good idea to actually use it on a regular basis as well.
  3. Have a support group: Having people in your life that support your weight loss goals is also extremely important. Trying to stay motivated on your own is almost impossible for most people. A good support network can encourage you and hold you accountable. Simply ask people in your life to help you with this. Sometimes this can be difficult for them, because they don't want to feel like they are reminding you of something unpleasant. Help them understand that helping you overcome your difficulties is a much better way of helping you feel good about yourself.

Now, why do I recommend an elliptical machine? Let me tell you a story about when I was in the Army. You see, in the Army we would frequently go on long runs. I can remember the wear and tear this constant pavement pounding put on my body.

Running creates a lot of stress that your body has to deal with. I remember the sore soles, the aching calves, and the painful shins, and even the occasional broken toe I received as a result of these runs. I also remember feeling drained and exhausted afterwards.

As you know, you can loose weight by getting some moderate exercise. Even just 15 minutes of a light, low impact session on an elliptical trainer 3 times per week can be very effective. Not only are you getting a cardio exercise, but you are actually getting a whole body workout, especially if you use the different incline and resistance levels, along with the hand bars to work out your arms.
