How to Breathe When Running

Today I want to talk how breathing. I know you know how to breathe but there is a lot of different versions out there about how should I breathe when I run. Some people think in through the nose out with the mouth. Well I tried that once and thought I was going to pass out.

Remember while you're running your body needs oxygen and the best way is to breathe through your mouth and nose and to breathe out the same way. The reason you try to completely exhale is you want to get rid of the most carbon dioxide that you can. If you do the oxygen you breathe in will be able to get exchanged in your lungs more efficiently and your muscles will thank you for this. Try to breathe deeply by breathing in from your belly and exhaling as much as you can.

Now one of the things that I discovered that really helps me is to sing a cadence. Like they do in the military. Yes I was in the Army and at first I didn't think it would help out too much but boy it really did help. Believe it or not by singing a cadence it will get your breathing pattern to where you want it to be. There are plenty to sing about and once you get a couple of them down you can make up your own and have fun with it. At times I'll even make some of them up and they don't make sense but does help me with my breathing.

Remember when you are running to not run too fast. A good measure for this is talk to yourself. Yes someone may think your crazy but if you can say a sentence and not be out of breath you are good. If you can't then your pace is too fast. Slow down until you can do this and not have any shortness of breath. The more you run and the better you get at it you will be able to pick up your pace and not worry about getting out of breath.

If you run and sing your cadence getting out of breath shouldn't be a problem. It will take some practice but once you get to know a few of the songs you may enjoy them. I thought at first "boy this is pretty silly" but the further I got into running while in the Army the more I realized it did work. I still do it to this day and do enjoy it. It can be kind of funny.
