How To Get Motivated To Start Exercising

Are you having trouble finding the right motivation to jump in to those workout clothes? Don’t worry we all do from time to time. Sometimes it’s our body’s telling us to take it easy especially if we’ve been working out a lot lately.

But sometimes it’s a holiday ease that has gotten a bit too prolonged. You know the one –“I will just take it easy for another week then I will start on Monday” and that Monday thing. Why Mondays when that symbolizes the least favorite day of the week to most people. In other words you’ve just put a stamp on training as one of those least favorite things since it is only worth to start on your least favorite day.

Another bad choice when it comes to starting on a Monday is that this is usually the most stressful day of the week, it’s as if it’s made for another bad excuse which you know is bad and that ends up making you feel even worse because you didn’t manage to start on the worst day of the week, bah.

Here’s an idea start on a Sunday it’s so much nicer and that do good feeling stays with you for the whole Monday as well.

6 tips to get and stay motivated:

1. Do you feel like skipping your workout? Try to focus on how happy and satisfied you’ll feel when the workout is over.

2. Put your training schedule on the fridge where you can see it, and then place a sign or a star for each completed work out.

3. Decide that you’ll get something nice for yourself after 6 weeks, but only if you have completed the entire program.

4. Make an appointment with a friend that you can exercise with, this makes it easier to stay motivated to work out.

5. Book your workouts in your calendar. Decide what times and days that is your work out time and make fitness a priority.

6. Try something new. There is a million different types of exercises, vary yourself.

Try to remember the benefits and what you gain when exercising.

There are lots of good, healthy reasons to exercise - or to continue working out. But if you by any chance forget when motivation is running low, here are 10 really good reasons for you to have a look at:

5 physical benefits

You will be in better shape

You will be healthier

You will lose weight

You get better posture

You sleep better

5 mental benefits

You'll have more energy for others

You’ll become more creative

You’ll feel more attractive

You’ll be happier

You’ll get a better sex life

If you feel like you are always tired you can get rid of that fatigue by treating it from 5 different fronts:

1. Make sure you get a good night's sleep. There’s no need to watch that film a second time around.

2. Avoid stress.

3. Eat healthy. Get those good nutrients in you. They will perk you right up.

4. Talk to someone when you feel emotionally exhausted and give yourself time to relax and de stress.

5. Exercise, but not too hard on a daily basis.

I know that it’s sometimes hard to stay motivated, but if we try to remember what exercising does for us and how fantastic it makes us feel it’s easier to stick with it. And remember – start on a Sunday.

Great advice! I really need to get myself motivated when it comes to exercising. I was doing so good quite a few years ago, doing an exercise routine once a day, plus going for two walks with our dogs each day. Then I ended up having to have a surgery, which had complications and never got back into my routine again. I really should at least start out with walking every day again. Putting a training schedule on the fridge and rewarding yourself after a certain time period is such a great idea!

Hi Anna, I've started using a friend to keep me on track. He calls me every morning but now it seems that I'm getting up automatically and sometimes I'm even calling him. Bottom line, these techniques do work. Many thanks for the added ones you detailed. Cheers!

That's so good to hear. It does make it easier to stick with something when you share the interest with someone else and now it looks like it has become a healthy habit for you, that's where you want to end up :).

I have a routine that I follow religiously! In the morning, I hike 6 miles (I live in the woods). After work, I go to the lakefront and ride my bicycle. I see the same people there and if I can't be there one day, I miss it and don't feel as energized. I had a great surprise on Tuesday, I found my regular bike route is actually 16 miles rather than the estimate of 10 miles I had been using. This means my speed isn't so awful after all! The other good thing. I ran into a friend who asked if we could ride together and I agreed we will ride every night. My friend is half my age but I don't really like to talk about age. He finally asked how old I was and I was honest, and he replied that he thought I was in great shape and he hoped to lose weight and look like me. He thought we were close to the same age. I was honored. I believe physical activity keeps you young!

That's it though when you exercise you stay young both in body and mind. I had the same fortune in the swimmingpool once when I swam 40 lengths thinking it was a 25 m pool and wondering why I was swimming so slowly, needless to say that I felt much better when I found out that it was a 50 meter pool :). Keep on moving we feel so much better for it.

I guess I have to post this how-to's on my board so that I will be reminded everyday. I don't need to lose weight but I need a lot of toning to do. Thanks for sharing, Anna.

Thank you :). The most important thing with exercising is that it keeps us healthier, the toning and slimming bit are just great bonuses.
