Is Body Weight Training Better Than Training With Weights?

The beauty of body weight training is anybody can do it. It will work for a young kid just getting started, an out of shape couch potato trying to regain former fitness, men, women, young, and old alike. It is really a flexible training approach.

Using the natural movements of the body tends to make body weight exercise less hazardous; i.e., you are not as likely out get injured working out this way. It is easy to integrate body weight workouts into other routines like running, cycling, games like basketball, for example and traditional weight lifting.

A runner or biker can improve their overall workout by adding some bodyweight exercises. Since running and biking are primarily lower body workouts, adding some pull ups and push ups at the end of a work out will really add benefit.

Improve Speed, Agility & Strength

Athletes participating in basketball or soccer or any skill sport can always benefit from increased strength and power. Jumping power, agility, quickness and overall fitness is enhanced using body weight training. Plyometric jumping builds explosive jumping power. Body weight squatting improves lower body strength, an essential element for any contact sport.

Traditional weighted workouts can be optimized by adding body weight supplemental training. Super sets are a fantastic way to maximize the efficiency of a workout. Bench pressing followed by dips and then push ups in a super set is a great chest blaster. Another great super set could be weighted front squats followed by 40 yard sprints. This is all you need for super leg workout.

Main differences between body weight only routines and weighted training are progression and the impact of gravity. Progression or getting stronger is accomplished by adding reps and sets to body weight exercises. Additionally you can reduce rest periods between sets and/or do super sets or circuit type training to increase the intensity.

Weighted lifting, on the other hand, primarily measures progression by adding weight. If you want to get strong and lift heavy weights, you really have to lift heavy weights. You’re not going to become a heavy bencher or squatter doing body weight training only.

Gravity affects exercise by forcing free weights to move up and down only. So you work directly against gravity when lifting and lowering weights. Body weight exercises allows you to modify the angle of attack with some exercises. For example you can assume an incline or decline plank position for push ups and hit the muscles from a slightly different angle.

What's the verdict?

So is body weight training better than weight training? No, just a bit different. Choose body weight training if:

  1. you want to work out anywhere
  2. you don’t want to pay for a gym membership
  3. you travel a lot and need a flexible training program
  4. you are out of shape and want to work out in the privacy of your home or back yard
  5. you are tired of being "ogled" by meat heads at the gym
  6. you want to build a trim, strong, athletic body
  7. you like the idea of measuring your progress against your bodyweight
  8. you realize that to excel at body weight training, you have to lose body fat
