It’s the Minutes That Add Up: How You Can Work Out Less And Still Get Benefits

According to a study in Taiwan, not meeting the current federal guidelines for exercise, might not be as bad as you think. In the United States, the recommended amount of exercise is a minimum of thirty minutes every day but more and more people are saying that the amount is too high and too hard to accomplish at one time. The new study says that just half that amount can actually be beneficial to the average person. Once exercising for fifteen minutes becomes a routine, people might be more willing to increase their amount of time spent doing moderate exercise. The researchers defined moderate exercise as brisk walking, light jogging or strength training.

Chi Pang Wen, the lead researcher at the Taiwan National Health Research Institute, has concluded that fifteen minutes may add as much as three years to a person’s life by decreasing some of the negatives caused by a sedentary life style. That study, which was recently published in the medical journal, Lancet, followed over 400,000 people for more than 13 years. Each person’s health records and their self reporting of their daily activity levels were reviewed as well as adjustments for certain biological differences.

The researchers found that getting just fifteen minutes of exercise on a daily basis decreased the risk of cancer related death by nearly ten percentage points. In addition, the researchers found that decreasing time spent on the couch or in front of the computer was also beneficial.

In another study, scientists have found that a sedentary lifestyle, including watching more than an hour of television at a time may decrease your life by nearly an hour. That study, done by researchers at the School of Public Health at the University of Queensland looked at over 11,000 Australian adults over the age of 25. Previously, studies have linked an increased risk of early death to television watching, but did not determine any numbers. The most recent study has shown that just one hour of television time increased the risk of death and lowered life expectancy by just under half an hour. Mathematically, every hour of television resulted in almost a half hour less of life.

That study concluded that it was not the television itself but the inactivity that was problematic. Sedentary lifestyles have increased in recent years, effectively coinciding with the obesity epidemic which is effecting nearly every country in the world to some degree. Australia is currently facing an obesity epidemic much like the United States. The obesity rate in Australia has more than doubled, with nearly 68% of the adults there listed as either overweight or obese. in the US, the obesity epidemic has struck two thirds of all adults.

The higher the obesity rates, the more incidence of chronic conditions and diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, both of which are overwhelming medical care systems and costing billions of dollars in care every year.
