Jack Lalanne And Motivation

When it comes to starting an exercise program or sticking with one, many of us need a little help in the motivation department. One of the best ways to get motivated about physical fitness is to look at the life of fitness guru Jack LaLanne.

Jack LaLanne will forever have the distinction of being known as the “Godfather of Fitness.” He proved that exercise was the best thing we could do for our health. He even put exercise above nutrition. “Exercise is king, nutrition is queen, and together they make a kingdom,” he would say.

He encouraged people to exercise regardless of their age. He taught that it was never too late to start and that bodies break down from inactivity and not old age. He firmly believed that it was a lack of exercise that caused many health problems.

When he started people working out with weights in his fitness gym in the 1930’s, doctors told LaLanne it would cause heart trouble. But he was convinced the medical experts of his day were wrong and he continued with the weights. Years later he would tell how athletes would sneak into his gym to work out.

When he was 54 years old, LaLanne had a contest with a 21-year-old man that was in superb physical condition. LaLanne wiped out the younger man, prompting him to say, “That Jack LaLanne is an animal!” That 21-year-old man was Arnold Schwarzenegger.

LaLanne was fond of putting on demonstrations to show what exercise would do for the body. He would swim long distances while pulling boats with him. In most of these demonstrations he would be handcuffed and shackled. He always pulled off these stunts with apparent ease. But once when he was doing a demonstration that required 1,000 chin-ups, the skin on his hands started splitting. LaLanne worked through the pain and completed the chin-ups because he didn't want to ruin the demonstration.

Jack LaLanne is called the “Godfather of Fitness” for good reason. He wanted us to see that exercise was the most amazing thing a person could do for the body. He taught that staying fit would keep people healthy and full of vitality even into their old age. He died at the age of 96 on January 23, 2011. His family said he died peacefully and had worked out the day before.

So whenever we need some inspiration to start and stay with a daily exercise plan, just keep Jack LaLanne in mind.

Great article. What an extraordinary man with a purpose. Reminds me of the saying 'use it or lose it.' Our bodies were built for activity - Jack LaLanne sure had that right! I tend to believe diet plays an equal part in health and nutrition. Thanks for the read.

Thanks for stopping by, C4rmen. You're right, the "use it or lose it" saying was something I know Jack LaLanne believed in. It is fascinating to me that he believed it was inactivity that caused people to get feeble when they were elderly. So, in a way, exercise can be everyone's "fountain of youth" to a certain extent.

That's some guy if you ask me, still exercising at the age of 96, that is considered motivated.

Yes, that's incredible motivation, Rob. He exercised for two hours every day. I bet the reason he didn't exercise on the day he died was that he just hadn't gotten around to it.

Yes, Heather, that's putting it mildly, isn't it? I wish I had just a little of his motivation!
