Make Your Exercise More Effective, More Fun And Better For You

We know that we are supposed to get more exercise, but actually following through is often a problem. Many people have excuses upon excuses and can't seem to find the motivation that it takes to get them up and off the couch and into a local gym. Even walking around their neighborhood becomes a major problem for many people. But, there are ways to get around those issues.

If you have found yourself on the couch for far more time than you care to mention, look around at your friends and family. The people that you surround yourself with are the most likely to influence your behavior. If they are all active and energetic, it is likely that it will be easier to try to join in with their fun. On the other hand, if they are all sitting there on the couch alongside you, then you will feel it is perfectly acceptable to stay sitting. If you can, then work to surround yourself with people who are either active and fit or are perfectly willing to push you to reach your goals. If you can set goals and work to reach those goals with a friend, it is twice as sweet. An alternative suggestion is to find someone who has already achieved their goals and ask them to mentor you through your own process.

Choose a workout plan or routine that suits your personality. For instance, if you are a social person, you might do well in a group setting like aerobics or a spinning class. On the other hand, if you are more of a loner, you might do better trying to do workout DVDs at home, on your own time. Keep in mind that whether you are with others or yourself, there are different types of exercises- so look for the ones that appeal to you.

Consider adding a heart rate monitor to your workout gear. Knowing what your target heart rate is will give you a goal to work for and the monitor can show you how close you are to hitting your target. That way you know whether you need to push harder or maybe ease up just a little.

No matter how you work out or who you work out with, remember the key to your success is consistency. Make sure that you are setting a schedule for your workouts and making that non-negotiable. It is a date that you keep with yourself for your own health. Honor it.

I liked this article. It was very helpful and I could relate to it. Right now, I've almost completed 90 days of the P90X Classic workout and, let me tell you, I hit some rough patches. It's not an easy regimen but I pushed through it because my goal is to get into the best shape of my life. But it was TOUGH. What helped was socializing with people who have the same fitness goals as I do. We encourage and spur each other on almost every day. Without that type of interaction, I never would have made it this far. You're right, consistency is key. Thanks for the reminder.

Have you tried Turbo Fire? I LOVED it. I did one round of P90X and one of Insanity. I am in the third round of Turbo Fire with Les Mills for strength training. ( I also hula hoop... goodness, I love that thing!)
