Never Lock Your Joints When Repping

You have likely been told that you always want to maximize your range of motion to fully hit the muscle evenly and to get deep tears. This is true however there is a slight modification to this I want to point out that is much more effective than the complete range. What I mean by this is when you are performing an exercise, any exercise there is always going to be a distinct point right before the full contraction that is better to stop at. This is the point right before you fully extend and the joints lock. It is at this point where there is still resistance and the muscle is still tense.

By staying in this range of motion that is only acutely different from the full range you keep the tension through the whole set. This is great for tearing muscles and overloading the muscle especially with shortened rest times. This is very demanding on the body as you can imagine so in order to be doing this you must know how to properly breath during your reps. You breath with your reps, breath in through the relaxation(eccentric) and breath out through the contraction(concentric). You breath with the rep, not before, not after but throughout the whole way up and whole way down.

By keeping the tension you do two things. First you avoid the ability to rest in between reps as you can do when your either fully extended or fully contracted. By cutting rest times you help to tear the muscle easier, meaning you do not have to do as many sets. Also it has been proven the more you cut rest times the more testosterone secretes. Testosterone is the hormone that promotes protein synthesis, which is a fancy word for rebuilding of torn muscles.

Secondly you avoid the short amounts of rest you do just because there is no tension on the muscle in the excess range of motion. This is something you have to feel for, you will feel when the tension is on the muscle and when it is lost it is at this point you want to stay in for range of motion. This is going to be the point right before the joints lock up from being fully extended and before being fully contracted. By eliminating all rest during the set and keeping the tension the full time, so long as you are still using heavy weights you will overload the muscle and stimulate the growth.
