The P90X workout program is one of the top fitness programs in the world. It's approach to fitness has had a lot of attention and popularity, as well as controversy surround it. In fact a lot of today's popular programs stem indirectly from P90X, taking elements of it's workout. But if you're someone who is considering doing this program, there are 3 things you should know before making a final conclusion.
1. This program is a major commitment: Here is a quick run down of the program: It lasts 90 days. You have to work out 6 days out of the week. Workouts are about an hour long and very physically demanding. There is also a very strict nutritional plan/diet that you have to follow.
2. The dieting portion of the program is more important than the workout: To maximize your results with the P90X, you have to follow it's diet plan. Although the diet isn't really difficult to stick to, it's very strict and changes every 30 days. No cheating whatsoever. The reason the diet is so important is because it's designed to help your body maximize it's muscle growth as well as regeneration after every workout. Failure to follow the diet correctly will result in less than satisfactory results.
3. There are a lot of potential injuries with this program: The primary focus of P90X is to complete a series of different workouts, targeting different muscle groups in order to trigger "Muscle confusion" which is a condition in which the body cannot plateau due to there being different workouts occurring and thus continues to experience consistent results.
However with the muscle confusion in action, there is a high probability of injury. This program does not recommend that you go crazy and lift weights that tear your muscles, or work yourself into exhaustion. Yet a lot of people feel it necessary to do so thinking the harder they push themselves, the better the results.
This is what leads to injuries. Use weights that are comfortable to lift. Not too heavy and not too light. Drink plenty of water during the workouts and take a break if you feel the need to. However, if you're someone who has back, knee or joint issues, this program is not ideal for your particular condition/s because it puts a lot of stress on those areas. If you do have these conditions and still want to complete the workout, make sure to consult with a doctor before trying.
Overall the success rate of the P90X is pretty consistent, provided you follow it's rules and guidelines. Although there are other alternative programs out there that are just as good as this one, but more flexible, this program still stands out as the most popular.
If you're a man interested in trying this program, please make sure that you are in decent shape before getting into it. If you're a woman interested in P90X, the story is a little bit different. Although it pays to be in good shape, most women seek toned and lean results from P90X, which it does provide, but there are better alternatives suited for the female in this particular regard.
