The news has been a never ending listing of the class action lawsuits filed not for faulty products but for products that should come with a glowing tag that says "you know better". They are sold by late night infomercials that should embarrass most adults and yet, they fall for them. The ads are basic marketing 101 and should be clear as a bell for the shams and scams but they work. So, the question should be asked: who is to blame when people fall for yet another marketing gimmick, claim or fad product? Should they get a free pass or should it be considered a lesson learned?
That is not to say that the marketers should be allowed to say whatever they want- far from it. But, the fact of the matter is that most people should not need a class action law suit to tell them that simply wearing a certain pair of shoes or sprinkling some powder on your food will give them the weight loss that they were trying to get. There are plenty of very desperate people out there, though and they will fall for these claims, no matter who is making them or how outlandish they should sound.
The Ab Circle Pro should be just one example of a golden "duh" moment. The ad claims that "three minutes a day" on this little machine is all that it will take to work the abdominal region and make it incredible, tight and toned. Most people know that the abs are one of the hardest muscle groups to get to its perfect appearance and that there are many factors that will influence how great those muscles will look in the end. Not everyone is bound to have a six pack, after all. Ask a trainer and they will tell you that abs are built mostly in the kitchen and that the work you do must include cardio to burn off overall flab. So, what do you get from your three minutes a day, then? You might get sore knees from where you kneel but you are unlikely to even work up a sweat.
Diet pills claim that you can take one a day and keep eating what you want, all without exercising or making any major changes to your life. Most reasonable adults understand that this is not possible and yet, there they are, buying these pills which turn out to be ineffective and in many cases, even dangerous. We are better than this. We are smarter than this but don't tell the marketers that, those infomercials are fun to watch when the insomnia kicks in.
