Sedentary Lifestyle And Physical Exercise

The regular practice of physical exercise is essential to avoid one of the major evils of modern industrialized societies: the sedentary lifestyle.

In this article, I will be presenting some of the most important health problems caused by human sedentary behavior and lack of regular practice of physical exercise.

Sedentary lifestyle

The term sedentary lifestyle, coming from the Latin word sedere ("sitting"), means a life-style characterized by a large physical inactivity, something that will certainly not be atypical for most readers of these pages.

The human body, like the majority of animals, is prepared to develop an intense physical activity, so as to be able to cover their basic needs and survive: nourish him, look for food, play, and avoid the dangers that lurk.... Nevertheless, the existing technological advancements in recent centuries have allowed man to cover these needs through the implementation of a physical activity increasingly smaller. Therefore, currently, a large part of the world population, especially in industrialized and economically more advanced countries, leads a life predominantly sedentary.

As is obvious, the possibility of living and even increase the quality of life without the need to carry out major physical effort constitutes an indicator of comfort, which in this day and age characterizes most modern industrialized societies. In any case, with respect to human health, the sedentary lifestyle should always be considered harmful.

Consequences of a sedentary lifestyle

Sedentary behavior has negative repercussions not only at the level of physical condition but also affects human mental health, emotional balance and social integration of individuals in modern societies.

The most obvious physical effects of sedentary lifestyle are manifested in tissues responsible for movements, i.e. in muscles, bones and joints. In children and adolescents, the lack of regular physical activity may cause a delay in development or an irregular development of the locomotive apparatus. In adults, the sedentary lifestyle provides a wide variety of problems, such as arthrosis, decreased bone density and loss of elasticity, muscle strength and resistance.

Another organic system clearly hindered by a sedentary human behavior is the cardiovascular system. In fact, according to statistical data, sedentary lifestyle is one of the main risk factors for developing coronary heart disease and, in addition, it has a very strong correlation with other risk factors not less significant that may trigger also the development of coronary heart disease, such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and obesity.

The association of several cardiovascular risk factors does not have an additive effect (i.e. the total effect does not correspond to the sum of the parts), but acts as an exponential factor (they "boost" themselves, i.e. the total effect is, in fact, much greater than the multiplication of parties).

The reduction in lung capacity, the decrease of psychomotor coordination and a hormonal imbalance that can alter or disrupt such basic functions such as sleep, hunger, thirst, sexual desire and the adaptation to cold and heat are other considerable harmful physical effects caused by sedentary lifestyles.

Last but not least, the lack of a regular physical activity can also affect the individual psychological capacity, since this is one of the causes that justify the fact that some mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, are so frequent in industrialized societies.

So, don’t forget to maintain your physical and mental health in shape by following some kind of regular physical exercise or fitness program. You'll thank yourself for the effort in years to come.
